DESCRIPTION
iMedia Browser... Do you like the media browser that Apple includes in some of its applications, but wish you could use it from any application? Now you can. Download the free Karelia iMedia Browser and use it whenever and wherever you need to access your library of photos, music, videos, and bookmarks. (Requires Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" or 10.5 "Leopard.")
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2:

New Features

  • The music browser now allows you to use the space bar to pause and resume the selected track.
  • Double-clicking on an image in the photo browser will open up the image with the default image-viewing application. Holding down the control key while double-clicking will cause the original (unedited) version of the photo to be opened, if available.
  • Lightroom parser now uses user-modified images rather than original masters
  • Audio browser now allows you to search by title, artist, album, or genre by holding down the popup menu on the magnifying glass icon in the search field.
  • Folder parsing, for Lightrooom 2 users who prefer to work with Folders rather than Collections

Bug Fixes

  • It is now possible to drag images to Microsoft Word documents.
  • Fixed an audio "hiccup" where dragging the slider to scrub within a track would set the time when the mouse was released.
  • Now properly displaying minutes:seconds counter in audio browser.
  • Fixed a bug where some collections were missing in the lightroom parser
  • Fixed issues with signing up for mailing list when not online
  • Updated FMDatabase to newer version which should improve performance
  • Update database code for improved parsing of Lightroom and Aperture libraries
  • Stability improvements (improving on Leopard, not Tiger)
  • Memory allocation improvements for large library parsing
  • Some speed-ups in loading libraries with many sub-nodes.
  • Localization updates

Known Issues

  • Loading large libraries with multiple sub-nodes, especially Aperture libraries, can be very slow especially if that library is the item selected when iMedia Browser first loads. We will be working on a long-term solution, but the short-term solution is to make sure that your Aperture library is not selected when you quit the application.

(Framework version 712)

Version 1.1.3:
  • Search in iPhoto library now searches comments and keywords too
  • Application now quits when window is explicitly closed (if it is launched and accessed via the dock, not the menu icon).
  • Update to latest Sparkle (r337)
  • Boost the number of allowable open files so that the live updating in the iPhoto module can monitor a much larger number of folders. This should affect users with larger iPhoto libraries who were having trouble viewing their thumbnails.
  • Fixed an issue in the underlying iMedia framework that was causing many files to be left open and thus crash the application. Thanks to Rainer Brockerhoff for discovering the cause and the fix for this bug.
  • Lists of files are now sorted with correct numerical sorting, like the Finder, so you get numerical sorting 1 .. 2 .. 10 instead purely alphanumeric sorting 1 .. 10 .. 2
  • Fixed some memory leaks and over-releases
  • Drag and drop performance enhancement, helps on older/slower Macs
  • Checks to make sure a clicked row is valid
  • Fix for music search to prevent duplicate matches
  • Library parsing speedup
  • Localization Updates
  • Enhancements to problem reporting to help with cases where reports weren't coming through
  • Localization Updates
Version 1.1.2:
  • Fix a problem parsing older iPhoto libraries
  • Maintain selection path in the source between launches
  • Improve live updating of libraries
  • Fix to lightroom database parsing
  • Lots of bugfixes
  • Fix several memory leaks
  • Improvements to problem report sending
  • Filter out invalid addresses in the email address combo box
  • Localization updates
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

JAY TEO  Repeatedly crashes on my Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.5. When it does run, it quickly gets into a state where the preview shows question marks instead of thumbnails. Select a different media type and I get the spinning beach ball followed by a crash. :-(

Karelia is a reputable company. I believe (and hope!) they will fix this soon.

BABYFETT  Same here. 1.1.2 doesn't work on the Leopard 10.5.5. When it doesn't crash it doesn't show any pictures and the info page is all gibberish. Had to reinstall 1.1.1.

JPIETRANGELO  Running Leopard 10.5.5 on Intel iMac. Tried running this multiple times, but no luck. It comes up with a dialog box where you decide whether or not you want it to check for updates and/or sign up for emails from the developer, but as soon as you click the OK button, the application crashes.

I have to assume we'll see a fix today from Karelia. Looking forward to it since it'll be a nice app to have at the ready.

GUNTIS  When I launched it first time, it started to load Aperture library and immediately crashed. Then I launched it again, but now I can see no images in Aperture library - instead of images it shows only question marks on the blue rectangles. When I click on Prefernces in the application menu, they don't open. When I click Send Feedback... - also nothing happens. Is this a joke on users? Have they tested their app before making it publicly available?

MacBook Pro 17" 2.33GHz 2 GB RAM, 160 GB free on HDD, Mac OS X 10.5.5 with all the latest updates. Aperture library contains 40.000+ referenced images.

PJOT  Agree, this update is corrupt. It doesn't show any pics or music, mostly question marks. I quickly picked up the previous version from the Trash and threw away the update.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Exact same experience - question marks for photos, prefs won't load, can't send feedback. Really bad build.

ONTON  Nice idea, but it starts very very slow and crashes immediately everytime I try to open the preferences.

Maybe needs a fix for Tiger? Or is it Leo only?

BABYFETT  I've been waiting for this update and was very disappointed that they didn't implement the ability to search for your photos via "event." "Last Import" and "Last Twelve Months" are too extremes, we need something in the middle so we don't have to wade through every picture to find the one we're looking for. And the search bar is pointless for most picture searches because unless you name each individual picture and remember that name they're just a number that the camera assigns and it's hard to search for.

****.

JEDIK  Great idea. Almost there, needs a few features to be 'the' (free) choice for media browsing on Mac IMO:

- double click opens in external viewer/editor (option)

- more info for items (maybe a floating window when you mouse over or CONTROL+click)

- more control for media playing (volume, etc)

- and slideshow for pics would be awesome! =)
