DESCRIPTION

iCompta is an application that lets you manage your personal accounts with ease. Each account can have its own currency and you can organize operations by type. You can then sort and filter operations to make statistics on your incomes and expenses. You can show a graph of the balance evolution of an account and even have a forecast for the next months.

iCompta also lets you validate operations which are on your bank reports and therefore check that you are up to date with your accounts. You can also make funds transfers between accounts. iCompta lets you deal with the common problem of who owes what to who when you buy things with people.

iCompta documents can be encrypted with a password. iCompta is open and can import/export files in the following formats:

  • iCompta tab separated text file
  • QIF
  • OFX

SLOB  Like other reviewers I've been through several alternatives (giving up on iBank along the way for the same reasons), and am now using iCompta along with Moneywell for their varieties of output and insight. (I imported everything from a Moneywell QIF then spent some time manually sorting out categories & transaction info).

What I'm mostly getting out of iCompta is good multicurrency & overall chart view when selecting various accounts and imo great historical reportage over various time frames. There's a fine filtering system too for more detailed readouts. This has helped set up budgets for future time frames, which also read out well and quite flexibly.

It has its oddities - only basic default menus, meaning you have to be ready to mouse through all the icons dotted around the window, & limited preferences, but overall it responds very well & quickly to my large amount of input (incl 4 years of daily cashflow along with a couple dozen account records over 7 years).

Good reception from Cyril, the developer, who replies that folders or binders will appear in v.4. It also has been syncing very easily with the iPhone version.

What I find really astounding about iCompta is that it's free. I donated 20 euros and still feel slightly guilty compared to what other programs are charging. Anyway, it's a deal. Don't overlook it just because it's nominally free.

KAZ219  Is there some smart import rules capabilities? I want to stop using iBank (buggy, buggy and oh, BUGGY), but this one feature from iBank is very nice for CSV import. Saves tons of manual work...

XADIO  If you open your CSV and change the commas to tabs then it is the same thing as iCompta TSV, but note the following.

L1: Date\tType\tKind\tInfo\tFrequency\tDescription\tAmount\tCheck\tCheck date\tComment

L2: 08/01/08\t\tRent\tCheckTransaction\tMonthlyOperation\tRent to Apt\t-550\t1\t08/01/08

...

Note:

- \t represents a tab, replace with tab

- line 1 are the standard descriptions which can't change.

- line 2-n are the transactions

- if you don't have a specific value use a double tab (\t\t)

- check is whether you verified the transaction

- kind and frequency are iCompta specific (experiment to learn all types)

I would suggest experimenting with creating a sample bank in iCompta, exporting it then looking at the export in TextEdit

MACTICK  Unable to import OFX or QIF files. When I click on Import Button and select format for importing and then pick file to import, nothing appears in the account. Cannot use iCompta if it cannot import downloaded bank statements.

ARVIDTP  I a really excited about trying this, but it does not seem to be able to save anything - I just get "iCompta[10430] Invalid store URL: nil" in the console when I try to save...

THEBRIX  Wonderful application. There are a lot of sometimes hugely overpriced personal finance programs, and this one has the right price (after I donate) for the tasks I do; I use a Numbers spreadsheet to manage investments and iCompta to manage day-to-day accounts. If you want an application to do both, look elsewhere; iCompta is designed for day-to-day work.

Being able to put in amounts straight away after first starting up then tidy things up later (no need to input tiresome "categories" or "classes") and everything being presented on one screen where it can be edited in place are probably the most useful features, but the presentation overall is first-rate.

Earlier versions were slightly buggy, but this one seems sound; I see that even little but annoying bugs, such as the Date field for transactions being clipped, have gradually been worked out.

AESCHYLUS  This program seems to lack a way to enter a check #. While it otherwise seems to be a pleasure to use, the lack of this feature renders this unusable as a primary financial program.

THEBRIX  You could put it in the Description - something like "[0123456] Cheque".

I suspect there is no such facility because, in France and a lot of other countries in Europe at least, cheques are either dead or dying ...

ARVIDTP  nice looking! doesn't have a cross-account transfer feature yet, but otherwise promising - I'll watch this one to see if it ever gets better than the no longer developed (or so it seems) Cashbox
