NEVC  I came across this program accidentally but within 10 Minutes of downloading and installing this program I had to use it to reinstall my Vista boot camp partition, worked like a charm and in 10 Minutes was back up and running.

RICKSNAPP  I had been looking for something to make a Windows partition portable since I first loaded Boot Camp on my Mac. Windows installation is always painful. The thought of having to sit through that process whenever I needed to move/resize partitions is not appealing by any means.

I heard of Winclone by accident but didn't hesitate to download it and try it. It is now possible to backup & restore a Windows partition in a much less painful manner. Once you have installed Widnows once, Winclone allows you to backup and restore that partition on a different partition or even a different computer.

It does want the partition that is being restored to be at least as big as the original, even if most of the disk space in the source partition was unused. If you can't create a partition big enough to hold the image created, there is a shrink partition utility available that will shrink the image to just a little larger than the actual used file space. This makes it possible to actually size a partition down to what is needed. Nice touch!

For features and utility I give this program high marks. My only complaint would be the amount of time that the save/restore process can take. I imaged 144Gb from a 300Gb partition. The image creation took somwhere between 8-10 hours. Restoring that partition took about 8 hours. This is not a great time saving, but it is WAY better than spending that time configuring Windows and the applications that are running under it...

SMACTRON  Winclone is a great utility for backing up and restoring your Boot Camp Windows installation. It's simple, fairly quick, and free! The UI could be prettier but Winclone is far superior to any other utility I could find for this purpose.

SFURST  This is a great, unique piece of software designed to back up your Boot Camp partition. It runs from the Mac side of your computer and backs up the entire Boot Camp partition. Because of the unique nature of the way the Boot Camp partition is handled, classic Windows disk imaging programs like Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image won't work. This little gem allows you to make an image copy of your partition(think how long it took you to install windows and then the 100s of XP updates) that can be easily reinstalled if you somehow mangle your PC partition. It also allows you to resize the PC partition (in case you need to make it bigger). It compresses your data as well, so the image doesn't copy the free space. My 5GB Boot Camp Partition backup was only 2GB.

I know of no other program that will perform these tasks. The program is effortless, speedy, and free. What more could you ask for?

BRIAN KENDIG  This is a terrific program, but unfortunately it seems to have a lot of incompatibilities with Snow Leopard - for some people it errors when they try to back up, for other people it errors when they try to restore from a backup. If you're on Snow Leopard, I recommend staying away from Winclone until the problems are addressed. See their forum at 'http://www.twocanoes.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4'.

BRIAN KENDIG  WinClone prompted me to upgrade to the new version 2.1, which I did. Launching that prompted me to download and install NTFSProgs, which I also did. But 2.1 won't back up my Windows partition - when I try, it gives me an AppleScript Error: "stat: /Volumes/Mac: stat: No such file or directory" "stat: Backup: stat: No such file or directory (1)"

BRIAN KENDIG  2.1.1 appeared today, and looks like it solves the problem - just now a backup with 2.1.1 succeeded.
