ZANGIEF  The new 1.5 is great, just one more thing I'd like to see to make it perfect: I want to be able to change the font, with a standard font selection panel. Excellent work, as were 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4, Signor Del Maschio. ^_^

ELTICO4  A beautiful piece of software. I only just discovered it, but it now has a home on my Hard Drive and even in my Dock. It is perfectly configurable and comes with a help file that is helpful and concise. It does its job very well, without being heavy on system resources. It really shouldn't be freeware.

Highly recommended. It's going to help me out tremendously!

BINGCADY  (To those noticing the BARQSX review below, the developer replied and set the record straight; all is well.)

Now, as to the product - it's awesome! I've used a similar tachistoscope program called Ace Reader for years. However, that program is both fairly expensive and much more involved than I've wanted. iReadFast is much more Maclike; simple, easy to use, very attractive, and works just as advertised. And since it's free, everyone can try out this great tool and improve their reading speed!

The only think I can think to add to this program in the future might be the ability to display multiple words at a time, since some speed reading techniques involve taking in whole phrases at a time instead of single words. But I am not certain whether this chunking technique can be used with tachistoscope presentation or whether the reader must choose his/her own chunk of words on which to focus.

Mille grazie per questo buonisimo regalo, signore Del Maschio!

GENGIS  Dear John,

thank you very much for your comment and even more for your donation that made me very happy because it was the first I ever received!

I'm happy to hear you consider iReadFast better than other products. This was my goal when I started creating it, after I discovered that none of available programs was complete with all the features I was looking for, while many of them are pricy.

About the multiple words display, as I said in the private email I sent you, I can tell you and all the Macupdate visitors that this option will soon be available in iReadFast. I already have a good working version of iReadFast with this feature, so I reasonably believe it will become the next release of the program.

Thank you very much for your support John,

Gianluca Del Maschio

BARQSX  Stay away! Developer is unreliable and untrustworthy.

When iReadFast first came out, I participated in the beta comments program, where I sent in my suggestions in return for a promised free license. I sent in my suggestions, the developer sent an acknowledgment of receipt, but I never received the promised free license. Follow-up emails went unanswered. If you're looking for a trustworthy and reliable developer, stay away!

GENGIS  Hi BARQSX, I apologize if I never answered to your suggestions. I received tens of emails and I know I missed to answer to some of them. As you know I was planning to sell iReadFast but then I realized that because of bureaucracy and taxes this was going to cost me more money than what I was going to earn. I abandoned the development of iReadFast for some months and only some weeks ago I decided to distribute it as freeware, I know people who sent me comments and suggestions like you may feel this was unjust, but the option was to not distribute iReadFast at all.

PIZZACAKE  I love this app. Looks terrific and really helps me with reading speed and comprehension by avoiding re-reading.

Here's an applescript which works as follows:

You copy the text (Command C) you want to be read

Run the applescript which does:

Asks if you want to open iReadFast if it's not open

Pastes the text into iReadFast

Presses the play button for you!

--Start of applescript

(* Please note only run this script after you have run iReadFast at least once. This is because in Leopard the first time you run a new application you have to give permission for the application to run.*)

tell application "System Events"

set isiReadFastOpen to (name of processes) contains "iReadFast"

end tell

if isiReadFastOpen then

runiReadFast() of me

else

activate

set Btn to button returned of (display dialog "iReadFast is not currently running. Run iReadFast?" buttons {"No", "Yes"} default button "Yes" with icon 1)

if Btn is "Yes" then

runiReadFast() of me

end if

end if

on runiReadFast()

tell application "iReadFast"

activate

tell application "System Events"

keystroke "v" using command down

tell process "iReadFast"

click checkbox 1 of group 1 of window 1

end tell

end tell

end tell

end runiReadFast

--End of applescript

Paste this into Script Editor and either save as script in folder iReadfast (create if necessary) in scripts folder or save as application bundle and run from dock.

Developer: Consider a service menu item that can do this. In Leopard keyboard shortcuts can be assigned to service menu items. I have a keyboard shortcut for speaking text, works very well. Nice work btw.

GENGIS  Hi PIZZACAKE, thank you for your comment, I just want to say that from version 1.12 iReadFast already creates a service menu "Read with iReadFast" (if you just installed iReadFast you may need to reboot the computer in order to see the menu). I know this is an undocumented feature and I'm going to update the program help in the next releases.

Thank you for you interest.

PIZZACAKE  Just rebooted and I see the service :) However, iReadFast doesn't start reading until I press the play button. Could you change this to automatically start playing?

GENGIS  Yes, I could add an option in the preferences for this, but I believe it's better as it works now for two reasons:

- Using the services menu item already makes iReadFast the active application so you just have to press the spacebar to start playing, I think this is already very straight and comfortable.

- The automatic play could make you save the press of a button, but could very likely make you miss the first words of the text in case the program window takes longer to become active, or simply because you need some time to focalize on it when it pops up.

Really I believe that as the program is now requires you to do an extra action, but doing so leaves you all the control and you will never have the playing started when you not expected it. I would like to know the opinion of other users about this.

PIZZACAKE  I only realised space activates play after I wrote the comment. Doh! I think the reasons you give for not automatically playing are valid. Thanks.

ZANGIEF  Assuming that users placed iReadFast in the Applications folder, you could add this to the beginning of that script to prevent the quarantine window (the window asking you if you're sure you want to run the app) from appearing:

do shell script "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/iReadFast.app"

GENGIS  Please send me any comment/suggestion about the new timing features in version 1.2. There are many ways to implement them, the one I used is just one of the simplest while enough flexible. I really would like to hear your thoughts about the effectiveness of the new features and how to improve them.

GENGIS  Happy to have made you happy :) ...please let me know how do you feel the new options work. I really think them can be enhanced to produce more natural timing but it could require a lot of work and testing.

MUSUBANA  Nice and useful program.

I only wish it could adjust its speed to the length of the word being shown.

It takes longer time to read a word like ’democracy’ than a word like ’the’, but in the present version of this app they get the same amount of time on ”stage”.

GENGIS  MUSUBANA It's a matter of taste: many people like to have a constant timing between the words because they feel the regular 'rhythm' helps (NOTE: also the Advanced Timing feature in iReadFast is designed to not break this rhythm), while others would prefer a variable timing. I will add this second feature to iReadFast so everyone will can experiment and find his preferred setting.

MUSUBANA  Thanks. A variable timing option would be really nice.

I too want a stable rhythm BETWEEN the words. (The blackouts must all be the same.) However, when reading

1) Technical texts

2) Texts in some non-English languages (notably German)

there are a lot of words which I tend to miss because they are too long to be read in one quick glance.

It is not reasonable that counterrevolutionary get the same amount of time as a or the. IMHO.
