DESCRIPTION
Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application that helps you placing your furniture on a house 2D plan, with a 3D preview.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.1:
  • As the version available on sweethome3d.eu is now able to save homes in the private space of the users registered to the site, its applet was improved to be able to:
    • save user preferences on server,
    • export a home at SH3D format to edit it with the downloadable version,
    • follow modifications made in the edited home to avoid the user changing browser page without saving it,
    • display the memory amount used by Java in the browser status bar.
  • Improved loading performances of a SH3D file.
  • Renamed print process as Sweet Home 3D followed by home name.
  • Fixed a bug in photo-realistic rendering that displayed black polygons around a home.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented home plan to be rendered correctly when walls were created with a double-click in a room which contains two points very close to each other.
  • Fixed a bug that caused memory leaks when importing 3D models and when creating photos.
  • Fixed a bug under Mac OS X that made menus and their shortcuts disappear after displaying Preferences or About dialog boxes.
  • Reduced maximum used memory from 1024 MB to 512 MB to avoid could not create the Java virtual machine errors under Windows.

SGHUEBNER  I really can't understand how anybody can use this app for any serious work. As it lacks some essential functions one would expect, like:

- Snap-to-grid (more than just showing a barely visible hairline if you reach the end of a to-be-connected wall...

- a list of the dimensions of all walls, where one can change their length via typing in their dimensions (there is one for each individual wall, but it isn't sufficient in any way and clumsy to use as well.

- The so-called "dimensions"-lines, while looking beautiful and useful are just eyecandy and do not provide anything to support you in placing walls at a certain position (see: lack of snap-to-grid-function). Furthermore, even those dimension-lines can't be positioned precisely.

- the concept of defining "rooms" looks totally unintuitive to me (one should be able to draw a room at a precise size, tell the app to place it somewhere say, in one corner of a drawn flat, and the app should do the rest and position the room accordingly.

Sorry to say it, but all in all, in its current state, this app is barely useable for anything but playing around with ideas. Forget precise work. And even those few functions you have are unintuitive to work with.

APPLEDOGX  I find it quite stable; more so than the paid applications I demoed before chosing to work with this program. I also find it very intuitive and easier to resize walls and rooms than with other similar programs. It would also be nice to be able to define a snap range; for example every 10 cm or every 6 inches, etc. The program needs a better way to do floors and the ability to do multi-story homes. It also needs to import Google Sketchup objects as many other programs can do.

Oh, and it's free, and better than many paid applications that purport to do the same.

RAMARTIN  I tried to use this, but the user interface is, like so many Java apps, horrible. It's too bad, since the features of this app seem nice. I was eager to create a layout from the measurements I have, but the awkward zooming, crude positioning and wretched data input left me exhausted after just a couple of walls.

This has a lot of promise, though. It seemed quite stable and ran quickly. The basic features appear well-focused and useful. But the drawing tools need a lot of work.

STEVE COPLEY  This little app is pretty sweet indeed. It's easy to use (the 2D design pane is intuitive, although doors and windows that snapped to walls would be a good idea) and the 3D view is well-rendered and easy to navigate through in walk-through mode.

Overall, think it's perfect if you want to quickly try out some room layouts, etc.

It's not on a par with the capabilities of SketchUp, but it is not intended to compete there - it's aimed at a more casual user.

And, of course, you can't beat the price!

Oh, as for it being a Java app - so what?! It's well integrated with OS X: menu in the menubar, prefs in correct place, nice toolbar icons, etc. What's not complain about?!
