EDITOR NOTES
This software may or may not become payware, but it is free during its beta/release candidate stage.
DESCRIPTION

JollysFastVNC is a VNC client which aims to become the best VNC client on the Mac. When I started ScreenRecycler I thought that there are enough VNC clients out there to support it. When the program started to get useful I realized that the VNC clients available on the Mac were pretty slow and people were complaining about the speed of ScreenRecycler. I was using VNCThing at the time which proved to be acceptable on PPC Macs but does not run on Intel Macs. Without a proper viewer people can't access ScreenRecycler in a way I imagined. So I started programming JollysFastVNC to enable people using ScreenRecycler. As I got a few mails about the VNC capabilities of JollysFastVNC I decided to enhance the program to be a fully functional VNC client. It's still in the early stages of development, even though somewhat usable and fast.

Use the applications about box to mail me problem as I do not read the comments here.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.00RC1:
  • Added automatic removal of bonjour hosts that use default values. Can be enabled via preferences.
  • Added selecting the host before the selected host when deleting.
  • Added fix for servers that send weird sizes during screensaver activity.
  • Added workaround for missing miniaturize button on 10.6.2.
  • Added defaults for changing the time to wait for a slow VNC3.7 server. Some VNC3.7 servers respond with a authentication response and some don't. JollysFastVNC waits usually 0.7 seconds before it assumes the server does not respond. It then continues on. If you see a message like "Workaround for wrong server sercurity answer in place" and still can't log in, you might enlongen that process as your server seems not to answer within the 0.7 sceconds. Use defaults write de.jinx.JollysFastVNC securityresponseworkaroundtimeoutms 5000 to set the time to 5 seconds.
  • Added defaults for disabling support for the pixelformat change extensions use defaults write de.jinx.JollysFastVNC disablepixelformatchange YES to disable it globally.
  • Fixed that bonjour icon is now removed when bonjour hosts are duplicated.
  • Added JNX license framework for release. You can request a request a trial license for free, when trial period is over you can request a new one... Connecting to a ScreenRecycler server does not require a license.
  • Changed escape symbol to show as ESC again as most users have problems recognizing the symbol (Most people seem to never look in their apple-menu).
  • No longer shows the movement of the visible part of the remote mouse while moving outside of the remote window.
  • Fixed a bug that might have left a connection in the list connected even though it wasn't.
  • Fixed a bug that third button emulation clicks would insert insert keyclicks.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

ZEIST  Going from a freeware version to a paid version when going from 0.98.50 to 1.0 after earning most of it's fame from being a fast freeware VNC client.

If I wanted to use a paid client there are better options, but I do not feel like paying for VNC clients when there are fully usable options like Chicken of the VNC. I only used jollysfastvnc since it is a little bit faster, but since this is now going shareware I guess I'll go back to cotv or go to TightVNC which installs quite easily these days from macports.

Greatly disappointed in the developer, and the software... and since going from freeware to shareware after pulling in users with the promise of a free VNC client is deception and speaks to the value of the software and the general morality behind future decisions rating it a one based on those facts is fully legitimate.

PIPER555  I've been impressed with the level of forward movement in the development curve of this fantastic software!! The developer(s) appears to have poured themselves into the solid release of JollysVNC and I look forward to helping fund further development by purchasing a license. I hope the monies will be incentive for a possible iPhone VNC app too...(wishing out loud)

I'm disgusted by the people posting their anger for having to actually pay for the fruits of this developer's labor. This VNC app has been invaluable for my needs and I would gladly sign up for a license to ensure its continued development.

For these people who believe they are entitled to ad infinitum freeware:

1. What have you done to fulfill the need for a wonderfully supported VNC client? Please, provide a link to YOUR offerings so we can avail ourselves of YOUR VNC freeware.

2. Why is this bait and switch?...WTF! Do you honestly believe this developer owes you something? Tell me you don't take free samples in the grocery store then, if you enjoyed it, buy that product.

3. For those using this software to support their profit making businesses...start giving all your stuff away and I'll shed a tear for your pain. Your IT guy gets a paycheck...so should the developers of the software you use.

4. When you finally get off government funded welfare you can put your free cheese down and celebrate your good fortune by buying a license.

BLACKSMITH_TB  Perhaps the general outrage would be dampened if the price were posted, either here on MU or on your site? I know I find it hard to gauge the value of a shareware app when I'm not sure how much it costs...

RGX31  version: 1.00RC1

Totally unacceptable, the developer has pulled a classic bait-and-switch move, and is now providing temporary 'trial' licenses on what used to be a free product.

Stick with the previous version people, or go to a different product. The developer seems intent on killing this app.

STEVEPET  Don't waste your time with this application as the developer has used the internet community for years claiming this was "freeware" when it was just a beta for a commercial product.

If the developer was trust worthy the paid version would have been a new "pro" version and this would have stayed freeware.

H3XDEC  -Interesting idea about "active area" of the screen, poorly implemented IMHO - needs to have "elasticity" (should probably use a cos() function to move the rectangle instead of simply dragging it along with the mouse)

-Relatively low bandwidth, however it could benefit from ability to set colors to any number from 16-color to 32bit

-for a paid app it should definitely include file transfers (with drag 'n drop functionality), a MUCH better GUI (screen with icons, not a text list), graphical logging, ability to import/export computer lists(connection list), group saved connections,

@Jolly:

I am not rating it 1/5 because it's shareware, i'm rating it 1/5 because for a paid program it simply does not have the interface or the features justifying any kind of payment.

JOLLY AKA PATRICK  You will be able to use it without buying it,

but I strongly suggest you buy it and support development of new versions.

Patrick aka Jolly

P.S.: Rating it badly cause it's Shareware is not correct rating.

T0RUS  For a free BETA program it was a good choice, missing some features and a few bugs. But if developer is asking for money - this program is FAR FAR FAR from being shareware-ready.

1 out of 5 rating

STEVE FRAWLEY  This is a demo. It is obvious he intends on charging for it and it will not be free. Price unknown. This version 'grants' a 30 day trial.

It is a good program.

ARTEMIS L  I've had a previous version expire, so I see what's coming. Thanks for the warning from the developer. I now need to remove this from several machines before the next expiration. The clock is ticking. I don't need any special features, so I know there will always be a free VNC client out there for me. This is no longer it.
