DIGITAL.PARDOE  For people struggling to properly apply the icons under Leopard I have written up a small tutorial here:

http://digitalpardoe.co.uk/blog/show/100

You will need the developer tools installed in order to apply the icons correctly (or at least a copy of the UNIX 'SetFile' command from someone with the developer tools).

DOUG S.  I love these icons, I still use them on my My Book. I've bought a WD Passport, I don't suppose you'll add those?

Oh, you mean hard drive? Studio Edition (not Pro!) is formatted for the Mac. Even on the red box it's written so. It has HFS+ formatted drive, and mounts on my Desktop with Firewire 800 cable. No problems.

DGEO  It mounts in desktop and it is HFS preformatted but it is not bootable, at least not in PPC Macs. Beware, this drive has other issues as well regarding waking from sleep etc.

WEREWEASEL  What partition map is the drive formatted with? WD probably formatted it with the GUID partition map for Intel Mac compatibility. If so, that would explain why you have trouble booting it on a PPC Mac. PPC Mac users should reformat the drive to use the older Apple partition map.

Hopefully that's all it is, since I'm thinking of getting one of these drives.

DOUG S.  GUID partition map is required to boot any volume on an Intel Mac. It is not, however, required for a PPC Mac.

ANDYF  I wouldn't phrase it the way you just did scottyarch. It suggests that GUID is not required for PPC but bootable. It is not, you cannot boot PPC from external GUID.

DOUG S.  See, that little detail I was fuzzy on. I couldn't remember if it could or not, I only knew that you had to have it to boot from an Intel.

GUNTIS  What about the WD My Book Studio Edition HDD icons? Studio Edition is specially designed and even formatted for the Mac! I've got a pair of them, now I need new icons... :-)

GUNTIS  How can icon be bootable?! You can assign icon to the drive, so that when you mount drive it appears with this custom icon on your desktop. That's all.

DOUG S.  Now that there's actually an icon for my drive I can give it a proper review.

Features: Great! It has all the My Book drives. I guess that's what you'd call features in an icon set. It also comes with the icons as well as the icons applied to documents so you can copy and paste them easily.

Ease of Use: Well he's given all the things you'd need to make applying them in whatever way you like as easy as possible.

Value: It's free. 'Nuff said.

Stability: The icons work great with no problems that I can see.

Plus the guy who made them is responsive to requests and that can't always be said of a developer.
