PEANUT BUTTER  still getting the problem of a loud buzzing when I wake from sleep and I have external speakers plugged in.... but the buzzing doesn't return every few minutes the way it did before.

FOULGER  If you have external speakers plugged into the line output at the back ,when you restart or start-up, the chimes come from the internal speakers.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Yes, that's correct, the chime does come through the internal speakers at startup and not external speakers. That is not a bug, it is a feature. My G4 PowerBook did not have this feature, it would play the chime via the external speakers.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  I should clarify that I am using a Macbook Pro now, not my old G4 PowerBook, and the chime sound comes through the internal speakers on my MacBook Pro. I like this feature because on my G4 PowerBook the chime would blow me away coming through my external speakers (I'd always forget to turn the volume down before restarting).

MEGAGRAM  Yeah, this is definitely a new thing with the Intel macs. It must be the way the Intel audio controller handles sound.

It's probably related to the fact that all the sound outputs seem to be completely unrelated to each other. For instance, if you have a device plugged in to your line-out, you can still have audio come through headphones or internal speaker. On my old G5 this was not possible.

FOULGER  I guess the only workaround is to lug your speakers into the headphone socket - but that looks very untidy - leads coming from the front

MEGAGRAM  This won't accomplish anything except mute the standard system sounds from the built-in speaker. The startup chime *always* comes through the built-in speaker no matter what. Unless you mute your audio before restarting.
