DESCRIPTION

iConiCal... Is your iCal icon stuck in the past? iConiCal allows users of OS X 10.2 to 10.4 to set iCal's icon and dock icon to show the current date in a choice of colours, even when iCal is closed.

Note:- Users of 10.2 to 10.4 require to run iConiCal daily to keep the icon date correct. iConiCal includes settings to make this simple. Ensure that iConiCal is copied to your hard drive before launching it for the first time.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.9.2:
  • Fixed a bug whereby the top of the settings window could be hidden by the menubar
  • Fixed a bug with loading the 'About' dialog on OS X 10.2 to 10.4
  • 'Close' and 'Minimize' buttons are now enabled appropriately
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

LEE123  It is my opinion that this app is most certainly needed on osx tiger. I always found it absurd that Apple did not have the ical icon reflect the current date. It should have been built in as it is in osx 10.5.

JIMW  Disclosure: I have not downloaded this or tried it so my comments are philosophical.

That said, while the idea is nice and might make a desktop more attractive, does a user really need another app, whose purpose is only to change the color of an icon, to run every day and as such be in a position to potentially cause conflicts, permissions issues, etc. and and further processor and threads to an already complex system, especially during startup?

All one has to do is examine the Activity Monitor after boot up, to get an idea of just how much is running in the background without the using doing anything other than booting the machine. So unless something makes me more productive, or does something easier or better for me, I am quite reluctant to add its load to my system.

As a suggestion, perhaps the app can be written to actually go into iCal to modify its resources to achieve this effect. That way the program would only need to be run once whenever iCal is updated by Apple. As well be noted by others, this might well be fraught by dangers as you are modifying an App. However a backup could automatically be made during the mod process and kept until the user is comfortable with the results. While any kind of mod to an app, (current program, or suggested alternative) poses risks, the latter would seem more preferable to me as it would not be affecting startup times or adding threads on a regular basis that could slow down some systems.

In any case that is my opinion, for whatever it is worth, and you are most certainly welcome to disagree with it. In fact I would be most surprised if there were other users that did not disagree with it. After all, it is only just an opinion and as such I do not expect everyone to agree with it. But it is my opinion right or wrong.

ANONYMOUS  If you download and try the program, you will see that whilst iConiCal requires to run daily on OSX 10.2 - 10.4 to keep the date up to date, it does not run in the background and hence does not waste system resources whenever your mac is on.

TOMDOHERTY  Great little app. except for the annoying way it messes up my permissions every time iCal is updated/system restarted/Dock refreshed.

SELF-INFLICTED  Same problem as others. Installed it, used it for one day... and realized the next day it was still stuck on the 29th. Deleted the app and any trace of it I could find, removed/reinserted iCal in the dock, pasted on the icon from a recent backup copy of iCal, restarted... and five days later it was showing the 29th again. Reinstalled one last time just to try to restore the default, then re-delete.

Nice idea, but not worth this trouble. I've decided I have no problem with my iCal icon displaying iCal's original date of release (June 17) after all.

BLOCKSOFT  When used correctly iConiCal is no problem at all. It requires to be run daily to keep the icon up to date. If this its one at startup or at a certain time each morning it is a very unobtrusive application.

Similarly restoring the default is as simple as pressing one button in the Settings window. Any problem please email me directly.

NEIL_M  I was thinking of installing this, but Leopard seems to auto update the date on the ical dock icon.

I was surprised.

Anyone else noticed this?

BLOCKSOFT  That's true Neil - iConiCal is primarily aimed at users prior to 10.45 and 10.5 users can still use it to change the color of the iCal icon.

DOBES  Finally, I can leave my iCal icon on the dock! The static date and red color were really unpleasant for me, but iConiCal finally changed it. Works great in Leopard. It's a small thing, but it makes a difference to me. Thanks!

RICK907  iCon iCal is a great idea but it doesn't work as advertised.

It doesn't change the dates. I've followed the installation directions and checked the two proper boxes in settings. Now I try to pull up the settings menu to double check the settings menu and it won't show regardless of how hard I press the apple key. My Mac OS is 10.4.10.

block soft has some apps I'd be interested in buying but I haven't bothered to look at them due to my experience with iCon iCal.

BLOCKSOFT  Rick, to bring up the settings, press and hold the Apple key just after launching iConiCal. You need to get in pretty quickly so you are holding the Apple just as the application starts bouncing in the dock.

I admit it is a little fiddly, but this avoids the problems which would be cause if you were holding the Apple key whilst opening iConiCal.

If you are still struggling, deleting the iConiCal Preferences file will force the settings to show the next time you launch iConiCal.

None of this is an issue in 10.5. As OSX 10.5 now updates the icon regardless, I have modified iConiCal accordingly, as you no longer need to run it daily. As such, the settings window always appears in 10.5

BILL SCOTT  I'm running OSX 10.4.10. When I first installed 1.3, it seemed to work fine. I updated to 1.4 and have had problems since. 1.4 didn't appear to start and update the icon consistently when I logged in. I've tried uninstalling the application using appledelete and then using spotlight to find any remaining preferenc, etc. files and drag them to the trash. Funny thing, after all that the application still seems to work, i.e. it changes the dock icon when I start ical. When I do a spotlight search, I can't find any iconical files. Where is it hiding? I like this application and would like to get it completely off my Mac so I can reinstall it from scratch and see if I can get it working right. What do you sugggest?

Thanks,

XASON  I'm having similar trouble. Mine froze on the seventh. The icon for being closed is stuck on seven, and the icon for open still updates but cannot be changed. I got rid of everything I could find, but it still updates! I emailed the developer as well. Hopefully we'll get this fixed soon.

EJ1  iConiCal won't set date at start up or log in. If I last launched the app on the 21st then it's always the 21st unless I launch iConiCal again. The settings window can't be accessed. Preferences can't be accessed because the program quits immediately.

How can I return iCal to normal?

BLOCKSOFT  It sounds like iConiCal isn't loading as your system doesn't know where it is. Have you moved iConiCal since the initial setup?

Having moved it, uncheck and recheck the 'Open at Login' and 'Launch at Midnight' options to reset these to iConiCal's current location.

To uninstall iConiCal, you simply need to drag it to the trash.

To change iCal's icon to the default, you first need to open the iConiCal settings, accessible by pressing the Apple key as iConiCal loads, and press the reset button contained therein.
