ANONYMOUS  Try with the Administrator account (the first created after os x installation to be clear). So the patch should be applied only once (and after every QuickTime Player update).

I'll try to fix this behaviour but in the meantime try as I said and please report if it works :)

ANONYMOUS  Not it doesn't add any functionality to Quicktime Player. This little app adds only icons for the filetypes for wich is necessary perian to play with QT (this is done patching Info.plist of QuickTime Player.app).

Since Perian adds only support for decoding formats, I've decided to give these files a nice icon, instead of the default blank one.

If you don't use QuickTime Player and/or Perian to watch your movies, you don't need this app.

LEOPOLDBLOOM  It's not really clear what you're asking. Like the developer said, Perian's Type Installer doesn't add any functionality to QT. But, if you're using QT (including Pro), Perian _does_ add functionality. QT Pro has many more options for converting, exporting, etc. than the regular version, but it still suffers from the same codec limitations. Perian solves this for you by adding a large variety of codecs to QT's library, making it a VLC-like media player that will handle just about any file format or codec you throw at it.

Perian's type installer simply allows your computer to recognize file types that QT doesn't support by default as QT files. For example, if you have an MKV file and it's set to open with QT (which will play it with Perian installed), it will still be described as a UNIX Executable file in the Finder because it's not a supported format by default. Perian's Type Installer causes files like this to be properly recognized and labelled as QT files.

FILMGIRL  Well, since I do have Perian installed - I thought perhaps this would work. As it stands, MKV plays sans audio in QT. If the problem is that the Perian plugin isn't compatible with MKV, then why is this add-on changing the icon type? It becomes confusing because I was under the impression this was released by people affiliated with Perian - if it's just some dude's custom Apple Script, that should be more clear.
