DESCRIPTION

HoudahGPS allows you to transfer track log and waypoint data from your Garmin, Magellan or Wintec GPS devices. It connects via USB to the Garmin and Magellan devices. It interfaces with the Wintec WBT-100, WBT-101 and WBT-201 devices using Bluetooth.

HoudahGPS may also be used to convert between the GPX, NMEA and KML log file formats. The Sony GPS-CS1 track logger uses a special variant of the NMEA format which may also be read.

Possible uses of HoudahGPS include:
  • Creation of backup copies of track log files for later use with HoudahGeo
  • Conversion of track logs to KML for visualization in Google Earth.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

MACPLANET  Finally a simple app for creating KML files from GPS logs. I wonder why nobody wrote this before ...

Very well done, thanks!

ARCITE  This software works very well with converting Garmin GPS files to KLM files for Google Earth. I am pleased with the results.

PIERRE BERNARD  The reason this application exists is that I gifted my mother a Wintec WBT-201 for her birthday. The idea was that she could geocode her photos using Google Earth.

Then she said: what if I don't have photos? I just want to see where I went.

Thus arrised the need to be able to create plain KML files.

Turns out GPSBabel is good at that. All it needed was a decent UI. I hope I was able to provide that to my mother. And I gladly share it with all of you.

Please support the GPSBabel project.

WAMEZ  I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 which connects to my Mac via USB. I, too, was unable to get anything off of the Garmin with this application. It just says:

Bad cmdsend r 0 sz 12

Don't know if it's compatible with my Forerunner, but there doesn't seem to be a list so hard to say.

PIERRE BERNARD  HoudahGPS is merely a front end to GPSBabel. Please refer to the GPSBabel documentation for a list of supported devices.

I couldn't test it with all devices out there, but many people use GPSBabel with great success. The catch is that in order to get Wintec compatibility, I had to resort to a beta version of GPSBabel. This appears to have problems with Garmin devices that I was not aware of when releasing.

You might want to swap out the bundled version of GPSBabel for the latest stable version. Or you could wait for the next version of GPSBabel. When that is released I will issue an update to HoudahGPS.

BLLOYD  If you want a good Mac application that works with the Garmin, look at Ascent by Montebello software.

I just found out about it last week -- it is FANTASTIC for cycling/hiking/running/whatever GPS use, specifically with the Garmin Edge and Forerunner computers.

Works with Google Earth, gives you ALL sorts of data... it is FAR better than the apps Garmin gives you.

BARRIKADY1  This doesn't work with OSX 10.4.10 and a Garmin 60Cx. The 60Cx shuts off after using HoudahGPS 1.0 and attempting to download a track to the computer. Did the developer test this app before releasing it as version 1.0?

However, Load My Tracks works great!

HoudahGPS was never meant as a competition to LoadMyTracks. LMT is excellent software which I like a lot. It does however not support the Wintec devices. Conversely it supports many devices which GPSBabel does not support. Use what suits your needs. It's free after all.
