DESCRIPTION

First Gen Games (previously known as Lander) is the start of a collection of games I used to play as a kid. This updated release includes Lander, Asteroid, Breakout and now Missile Command. I've tried to keep them true to their original gameplay, with just a few artistic modificatons.

Lander is an old style spaceship landing simulator. Keyboard arrow controls are used to rotate and apply thrust so that a safe landing on the pad can be achieved.

Asteroid is the great classic action game. Destroy those rocks but watch out for their pieces when they explode!

Breakout's goal is to keep the ball bouncing up until you've destroyed all the blocks. So far only three basic block maps are implemented, but more are on the way!

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.3:
  • New Missile Command!
  • Improved rendering speed!
REQUIREMENTS

CYBORG9  Attempted to Download FGG but it caused the browser I was using(Firefox) to freeze and become unresponsive. Could not force quit it. None of my other browsers would launch.....their dock icons would bounce endlessly. Could not force quit them.

Tried to restart my Mac but no go. Had to do a hard shutdown using power button. Some of my browsers still wouldn't launch after restarting.

Ran Diskwarrior, which reported that a number of files were damaged beyond repair.

Finally, all my browsers stated working normally again, thank God.

Everything on my Mac was working just fine 'till I attempted to downloadFGG.

Don't think that I'll mess with FGG again...seems too risky, a big headache.

    ANONYMOUS  Hi Cyborg9,

Sorry about your downloading issue, but I have been unable to reproduce you problem so far on the development machines I have available. Its only an Zip download so I'm thinking maybe it was another issue on your computer? Could you do me a huge favor and try it one more time and let me know of your success or if your still having a download issue?

    Thanks!

CYBORG9  OK, I downloaded FGG once again, and experienced no issues this time. Dunno why I had problems earlier.

WIZEGUY  Hi Everyone, from a few emails I've found out what was posted last night was not a universal binary. I've fixed my build settings and reposted the app to the sever. It will now work on PPC systems. Sorry!

PETER DA SILVA  The next game should be "Space War", since that was *the* first generation video game.

Plus a hardware project to build a USB-connected PDP-1 front panel.

MISCHIVO  Umm yes. This is NOT a universal binary, as I am clearly unable to launch it on a powerbook. What's up with that?

SPUDZO  I'm just very impressed with the 132k file size.

Works great! I remeber fondly hating the arcade version with a passion - thanks for the "Newbie" setting. Now I can erase all those painful arcade version crashes from my memory!

TOMIS  This game should be a model to all software developers. This program comes in at under 200k and it's a Universal binary!

The game play is sparse but accurate. It does exactly what it needs to, and nothing more. No useless bells and whistles to bloat it up.

    Excellent.

My only suggestion is that the game play needs to be varied more in the harder levels. Perhaps having the target shift slightly, or starting the craft at a much higher altitude, or even having the craft start at slightly random angles and decent velocities.

MARK EVERITT  I'm having no trouble landing the craft. Sure it's difficult, but as long as I'm paying attention then on easy it's -easy-. My thanks to the developer, I remember a game like this and you've replicated it nicely.

SYZZYGY  Since this is a freebie and it appears to be the developer's first offering, I'll be kind and won't give it a rating.....yeah, it's not good.

While the game is very simply designed, and there's not much to it, I found it nearly impossible to keep the "lander" under control, even at it's easiest setting. I kept crashing and crashing the lander time after time(I just can't believe the original moon lander was THIS difficult).

It was a progressively more frustrating and unsatisfying experience. So I just gave it the finger and went on my not-so-merry way.

Sadly, I guess I'm just not cut out to be an astronaut.

WIZEGUY  I figured there would be some compliants about the difficulty level, but I do remember the original being so difficult. I based the levels as such: My girlfriend could land on the easiest and I could just land on the hardest. Old games were always crazy hard since there actually wasn't that much content, and this game is no different. Perhaps I'll also adjust the speed of play on easier levels for people who aren't familiar with this type of control. Thanks for the comments.
