DESCRIPTION

Mail Badger is a free plug-in for Apple Mail that lets you create multiple badges to Mail's dock icon, to indicate the number of messages in different mailboxes, or the number of messages that satisfy a set of conditions.

The main features include:

  • Create badges that indicate the number of unread, read, or total messages in a mailbox or group of mailboxes
  • Create badges that indicate the number of messages that satisfy a set of criteria (such as the number of messages from a particular e-mail address, or the number that contain attachments)
  • Create badges that take their value from an arbitrary block of AppleScript code
  • Customize the appearance of your badges – choose their shape, font, color, transparency, size and location; even use your own images instead of the built-in ones!

Mail Badger integrates seamlessly into Apple Mail, adding its own section to Mail's Preferences pane to make adding new badges to the dock icon as easy as possible. Documentation is included in the form of a standard Help book that can be accessed by clicking the purple "Help" button on the Mail Badger preferences pane.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.3:
  • Mac OS X 10.5 is now required. Older versions of Mail Badger will still remain available for the time being for Mac OS X 10.4 users, but no new 10.4 support is planned.
  • A proper uninstaller is now provided.
  • The "Spiked Circle" image set has been renamed "Starburst."
  • Three new options have been added to the "Compute the message count for this badge..." section: unread/read/all messages in account.
  • If you have modified the standard Mail.app icon in its application bundle, Mail Badger will now use the correct icon for its background, rather than reverting to the default.
  • For ease of use, a new option, "Include unread messages only", has been added to the "Edit conditions" panel, and it defaults to "on" for newly created badges. To include read messages in the count, uncheck this button.
  • Selecting images for an image set now uses the standard OS X image picker, allowing you to crop and scale an image in place, as well as take a picture using your computer's built-in iSight. Due to this, users are no longer asked if an image taller than 128 pixels should be resized (a return to 0.1 functionality).
  • Core Image is now used for all image manipulation. The old, slower algorithm available by setting "UseBasicColorizationAlgorithm" in the user-defaults file is no longer supported.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

APIKOROS  Oops. Wrong again. Mail.app works for a while, then same old problem occurs. I delete the MailBadger bundle, and Mail woks perfectly again. When I reinstall MB afresh, Mail works just fine for a number of weeks, then the same old problem recurs. It's clearly MailBadger that's causing the problem. Too bad, really.  (Version 0.2)

APIKOROS  Well, as the reader can see below, MB didn't work for me with OS 10.4.10— but it seems to work perfectly with 10.4.11. Thanks for the freeware!  (Version 0.2)

APIKOROS  On my 1st-generation Core Duo iMac running OS 10.4.10, it causes Mail to endlessly spin the little downloading pinwheel next to the inbox, but it doesn't download messages from my Comcast POP account. When that happened, I could only force quit Mail. Removing Mail Badger restored normal behavior. I reinstalled MB and replicated this— twice. It's too bad, as MB's features are very desirable. I look forward to future versions.  (Version 0.2)
