DESCRIPTION

Play is an application for playing and managing audio files.

Play currently supports playback of FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Musepack, WavPack, Monkey's Audio, AAC, Apple Lossless, MP3 and various other audio file formats.

For lossless formats such as FLAC and WavPack, and for Ogg Vorbis and specially-tagged MP3 files, Play supports gapless playback allowing sample-accurate audio reproduction.

Play processes all audio using 32-bit floating point precision, providing the highest possible playback quality for files sampled at all bit depths. Additionally, Play is tightly integrated with Core Audio and supports DSP effects using Audio Units.

Play's powerful searching and organizational features make finding music a snap! Play's integrated browser allows you to easily locate tracks in your library grouped by artist, album, composer, or genre, while smart playlists create unlimited ways to combine your music.

Need to make changes to your audio files' metadata? No problem! Play has a powerful integrated metadata editor that allows multiple files to be edited at once, even if the files are in different formats. And if your files are missing metadata, Play can use MusicBrainz to help fill in the blanks.

Never touch your volume control again! Play supports replay gain, allowing files to play at a constant volume despite inherent differences in their loudness.

Play is integrated with the official Last.fm client, so you can share your listening habits with everyone. Consider joining the Play Users group!

Play is free software released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

UNCOY  Cog is great but stopped working on me.

Tried Vox, Taply and Play.

Vox and Taply had very high CPU usage in background when not running.

Play is a bit ugly but uses .1% CPU in the background. Plays music very well. Seems to have some kind of treble boost which makes music sound sharper on so-so systems. On my B&W towers through a top of the line NAD, the sound is a little bit too sharp.

CASCHREIER  Though I love iTunes there are some things that are missing and I found them in Play. Basically I was using play to preview audio, specially FLAC and Monkey's Audio, the interface is OK but I don't get the Queue window, if you want to play something that is in the library you have to drag it to this window because if you doble click something in the library nothing happens.

But what, in my opinion, is the best feature of Play is it's playback audio quality. I guess it has something to do with the 32 bit floating point process, I really don't know... but man compared to iTunes my music has gained more life, better soundstage and the stereo image is wider. So I started to use Play more often just because of this, if someone with a audiophile profile would give a more detailed review about Play's audio quality I would really appreciate it, so I don't think it's my imagination.

AUDIOPHYLE  After years of managing massive iTunes libraries, I tried songbird and play today. I didn't like songbird, but I am going to stick with play.

It does everything as advertised, plays all of the formats iTunes won't.

Play actually sounds better then iTunes. I didn't expect that, but there is a noticable difference.

One last thing, Play doesn't change the data of the music files at all unless you manually retag it. So for all mac bittorrenters there is no need to make a copy of the files to listen to while leaving the original to seed.

This app is still missing a lot of features that I would like, however it lacks all of the bloat features that have weighed itunes down over the years. There is no video support, no podcasts, no tv shows, no retardo multimedia store attachment. Just an audio player that works like an audio player should.

I am looking forward to future releases of this app. Cheers to the developers for this and the other handy and streamline programs they make.

DARTH BROOKS  Working OK here on 10.4.10 PPC, although I haven't explored features beyond bacis play functions. Thanks, Stephen F. Booth. However, according to the README, Play "supports DSP effects using Audio Units." I've searched all the menus and can't find anything to support this.

SBOOTH  There seems to be a problem with the Intel versions uploaded on SourceForge. I've re-uploaded a version that works correctly, but it might take some time to appear on all the servers. In the meantime you can download a working version at http://sbooth.org/files/Play-0.2.tar.bz2
