DESCRIPTION
AutoRate application automatically sets the rating for selected tracks in your iTunes library according to how often each track is played, and how often each track is skipped relative to the rest of your library.

It uses a 10 bin normal cumulative distribution based histogram to automatically scale the ratings so that the mean rating is ~3. Optionally you can use a linear scale with manual shift, scale factor and mid range skewing.

Both the track play count & skip count are used in conjunction with the length of time each track has been in your library to determine, on a relative basis, how much you like each track. Ratings become dynamic and change with your taste in music following how you listen to your songs.

Complete ratings allow you to quickly select playlists of songs that you like.

BRANDON MOL  Can you be more specific? The playlist selections works I know this for a fact - But there have been issues in the past with regard to this feature not working on macs using other languages.

When you say it doesn't work, what do you mean? ie… is there a list of playlists to choose from, you select one, and it ignores your selection? Or do you mean that there are no options in the list, or what?

I am pretty sure that I sorted out handling these list names independent of interface language so I am confused. Please provide more information.

COBOLD  Thank you for your response and sorry for not informative first post.

I'm using Mac OS 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0.2 with the Russian localization. In iTunes, I use a playlist only with English names or numbers, such as "Music New" or "2009-11-05". In AutoRate not active window with a list of choice in the "Rate tracks in" and "Analyse statistics from track in", located in the "Prefernces ..." - "General" - they are just gray and not react to mouse clicks.

In version AutoRate 1.5.2 everything works fine.

BRANDON MOL  ok, I think I understand. Just to be sure, do you mean the entire menu is greyed out and does not respond to mouse clicks, or the options in it are greyed out and do not respond to mouse clicks?

If you could take screen shots it would help. Something like this:

BRANDON MOL  Should be fine now. If not please provide me with the crash report if applicable or a listing of your OS version, iTunes version, the processor type in your system. If you are running snow leopard, try running it in 32 bit intel as well as Rosetta modes and let me know if it works in either of those emulations. I think all this is sorted out in 1.5.7 or prior.

BRANDON MOL  1. Does it give you an error message?

2. Is this the first time you have used AutoRate or did you have a previous version? If so, did it work?

BRANDON MOL  It may be crashing on your system, but it isn't because of 10.6

Version 1.5.3 runs on both Leopard and Snow Leopard just fine. I am not saying you don't have a problem, just that it isn't because of 10.6.

What exactly is the problem and/or error message? Try version 1.5.4+ and if you still have the problem, please let me know. I made some significant changes in 1.5.4, particularly in the area of support for other locales. In 1.5.3 and older, the software would reference playlists b name , ie: "Movies" which is not the case for systems running with locales other than English (US) or English (Canada) . This should be fixed now, amoung other things.

PJHOT  Had previous versions. I think I've been using it almost since the beginning and it has ALWAYS worked as advertised & flawlessly.

I'm downloading the 1.5.4 update now.

PJHOT  Still no luck. Analyzing entire library generates an error window & a hang. Analyzing a selected playlist applies about half of the results before a hang. :( None of this happened until I installed 10.6 and continued through the latest iTunes update.

CHRONICFATHEAD  Nice looking little app. Very simple in operation straight out of the box, so to say. I preferred the results after I went into the preferences and adjusted the Skip and Play count settings, but there are loads of ways for balancing the results so it fits your ideas of how it should be rated.

i.e. I hate half stars, so I turned that off, simple.

Nice one, finally rated all my tracks, and the one's I listen to most are rated higher. From there you could use a smart playlist to contain only 4 and 5 star rated tracks.

HUBBIN  Will not work at all with other iTunes scripts. I kept getting an error every time I started it up but as soon as I deleted Fetch Art (which I didn't want anymore anyway but was too lazy to delete until now) it started working perfectly. However, plug-ins such as SRS iWOW don't interfere with it, which is very lucky for me.

CHIPCHAP  I'm not one to really care much about rating music; my mood changes and I rarely can state that one favorite song is objectively better than another. However, the formula used makes sense and it's been a delight to see what it determines to be my favorites. I feel a little giddy each time I run AutoRate, often "rooting" for my favorite "horse" that day.

It would be fun if it could also generate reports for tracking favorites' trends over time. Perhaps there exists a social/music site that this could integrate with in that respect, but I'd be even happier if it could just create spreadsheet or database reports. In other words, it would be neat to see how songs stand in my own little test of time.

Overall, it's a neat little script; simple and interesting to use. Anyone who doesn't bother to rate their music collection in iTunes should give it a try: it won't hurt and you'll probably get a kick out of the results.

Thanks!

BLOCKSOFT  Great little tool - really handy for people like me who have never rated thier iTunes tracks as it would take far too long to rate the entire library.
