DESCRIPTION

MacDust is a small and lightweight application designed to clean up your computer. MacDust performs many tasks that could easily take you another five seconds if you weren't using MacDust. The application also removes hard to get at files, and even files you've forgotten about. The Caches folder can get rather large, so using MacDust at least once a week can save you hundreds of megabytes!

WHAT'S NEW
Very Important Update! Version 2.75:
  • Free update for 2.x users.
  • Fixed an issue with browsers cleaning that could remove bookmarks.
Version 2.74:
  • Removed Sparkle Framework - this makes MacDust smaller, updates to MacDust 2 will not be continued so Sparkle was removed to avoid confusion during the update process. (plus it was broken anyway)
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later.

AKROBAT  Well, it's been a while since I last reviewed this. It's first incarnation was somewhat dangerous to use... so I'm glad to see it no longer trashes the System Receipts and mess up your Mac.

On opening the app you're presented with a number of tabs from which you can choose your cleaning options.

SYSTEM - Ok. But this basic cleaning can all be done by Onyx or Ice Clean or Main Menu.

BROWSER- Ditto. Can be done by free apps.

However there is a choice of browsers which is handy.

CHATS - Again, these are just logs. Nothing special there. Easily cleaned by free alternatives.

TORRENT - Can either be cleaned by a free app or you simply remove the Torrents yourself with a few clicks. More window dressing than anything else.

OTHER - Just a bunch of caches... again easy to re move with any free application.

MacDust is not a 'specialised cleaning' app. It simply cleans out caches, log files and temporary files. What it does is divide the cleaning between certain applications you may or may not have on your system... this is the 'specialised' part.

I'll be honest: it's not a bad application, but far too limited to ask for money especially since the likes of Onyx, IceClean and Main Menu (to name a few) do the same job and much more, such as removing .DS files, updating prebindings etc, etc.

Still, for people who don't have much Mac knowledge it probably ideal.

PERSON1229  MacDust never deleted System Receipts, it deleted your local ones - which are in fact safe to remove, but this feature was removed due to confusion.

There aren't any other free apps that clean out your torrents, MacDust doesn't delete the content you downloaded via torrent, it deletes the .torrent that many torrent applications such as Azureus keep unnecessary copies around.

Very few of the Other category can be done by any other application.

Many people feel more secure with Shareware than Freeware because Shareware is a product, it is much more heavily tested and solid than freeware. Not everything in life is free, so just get over it. Just because you _think_ there are free alternatives doesn't mean there are. MacDust is on top of the other system cleaning apps, for price and useful features.

AKROBAT  Indeed. Though I would pay for the free apps I mentioned... simply because they're good, solid, tried and tested software. I simply wouldn't pay for yours as there's really no comparison.

MAC-MAN  Tried this thing but must honestly say I was not impressed. There are many free apps out there that are far better and do a lot more. Why he tries to charge for this is a mystery.

MainMenu, for example which is also featured on this site is 5x better and does a lot more including serious deep (and safe) cleaning. I personally don't find MacDust an 'oustanding' tool as the Developer states, but that's my opinion.

PERSON1229  MainMenu isn't designed to do specialized application cleaning the way MacDust is.

PERSON1229  Please note that Onyx and MacDust fall into very different categories. I most certainly recommend Onyx for your system maintenance! MacDust is for cleaning and you can to give it a try for free to see the difference between these two outstanding tools.

TERENOVO  Sparkle wants me to update to the Leopard-only version. Since I have Tiger, it would ruin it on my system. I would suggest using a different app-cast URL for the Leopard version so that us Tiger users aren't bothered anymore.

PERSON1229  It is recommended that Tiger users turn off the "Check for updates at launch." preference.

I'm not sure I can ever make a Tiger version again =\

FONIX  This application improves with each update, and it was great to begin with. The interface is clean, and the list of applications it cleans grows every few weeks. The developer actually listens to the users, and does what he can to accommodate our requests--including mine for a more thorough cleaning of some straggling Acquisition files. He is fast to respond, intelligent, and humorous. Frankly, we need more Mac developers like him.

There is a trial of the software, so try it out and see if it meets your needs. And give the developer at least a few hours to reply to your email or purchase. This is not McDonald's, you know. ;-)

P.S. Tim, thanks for the smart code for adding AIM online status to RapidWeaver. That was cool!

BEN_MARKO  A lot of what this app can do can be done also by free apps out there.

AT  Don't buy this. Bought this during the promo. Two weeks later, the developer updated it to version 2.0 and rendered my purchase useless. Asked what's going on and the developer said he made a mistake in pricing and begged me to buy for this upgrade.

I luv to help and support developing software. But his reply is simply inexcusable and ridiculous, and his method is despicable.

IGAUCHO  I just updated to 2.0 and found out the hard way that this is a paid upgrade if you had the previous version. The good thing is that it's only $3.95 to upgrade.
