DESCRIPTION
Periscope is the next generation of web cam software that lets you use your iSight to capture activity in front of your Mac's camera and then save or share that image simply and automatically.

Within seconds, you can configure Periscope to monitor a room for motion, sound or on a timer. Periscope will send real-time images to your e-mail, .Mac web page, or FTP site, and can upload to Flickr!

Put it this way, the next time your mini-fridge is raided by a roommate pleading innocence... You got the dirt.

  • 'scope your home when you're out of town.
  • 'scope for intruders with motion detection.
  • 'scope the kids when you're at the office.
  • 'scope a time-lapse movie of your workday.
  • 'scope for security.
  • 'scope for fun!

JOELEE  Got this on recent promo. Missing lots of useful features, like Applescript support to start recording and ability to execute a script file on Capture.

PFITZPA1  Got this as part of the mupromo bundle recently and was excited to try it.

However I could never get the email sharing to work on my .mac account, making it practically useless for me as email is the only sharing option that works for me.

The options were fairly easy to navigate and figure out, and the GUI is not bad.

The Window/Activity log showed nothing for me even though I had several motion and manual triggered shots.

CPU Usage is ridiculous, I presume it's processing the video to detect motion but maxing out the CPU permanently also makes this a non-starter. (Note when I restarted periscope the CPU usage settled down at around 10% so I'm not sure why the initial high usage was there)

Lack of video, which should be a simple feature to add is also a minus.

I couldn't get a sense of what the delay between snaps was after a trigger and if it was configurable.

The default setting for the video is reversed, I'm not sure why that is but I had to find the video setting to flip the video so it looked correct.

The Support/forums were of very little help. Most of the related posts had no resolution that could help me.

I gave this a 2 for ease of use because I had difficulty verifying/debugging why email was not working and help was useless.

For value I got this as part of the mupromo package so the cost was not an issue, however the fact it doesn't work with email makes it little/no value for money as I can't use it properly.

Stability I gave a 3 because of the CPu loading issue.

I wished this would have worked like I wanted it to. Great idea, not so good execution.

JKT  I've just got this as part of the MacUpdate back to school bundle and, although the premise and features are great it is too buggy to earn more than 3 stars. Sharing by e-mail just doesn't work (which, as I am using MobileMe, is somewhat unforgivable as this should be the easiest setting to use) and there is zero feedback as to why other than a beep which doesn't infer any meaning. Worse yet, if sharing by e-mail is on, the app continuously uses greater than 100% CPU (on a C2D iMac), until it is quit and 10 to 20% when simply running in the background. Neither is acceptable behaviour.

I've marked down ease-of-use and stability because of this - if the problems were fixed then it would be a 4 star app, easily, as the features can't be faulted. What is particularly good is the ability to set activation regions for capture rather than having the whole view trigger photo taking. This means you can set areas that you won't trigger yourself through normal use. There is however, one exception and that is the sharing to .Mac - we should be able to lock down the folder the photos are uploaded to and the site to view them (otherwise it is trivial for someone to find images of the inside of your home and/or remove the images).

WEBKARNAGE  Useful review there, but I don't think you can say MobileMe is going to be the easiest thing to get good results with at the moment. Apple can't for one, hence our getting 90 days added to our contract free. They may be letting this settle before putting in more work on that part, I certainly wouldn't be chasing moving goalposts if there was something else to fix.

****.

WALRUSCP  I bought this when it was on special here at MacUpdate, and it has since paid for itself and many times over. Setting it up to watch our front door while away on vacation, it caught our hired pet sitter not staying even close to the allotted time contracted. We showed the company the timestamped photos (which we had emailed to us while we were away), and we ended up saving nearly $200 because of it.

The only problem has been that sometimes setting up the option to email is a bit funky. For some reason it does not always work the first time, and it could be related to Gmail. Not sure though.

I would also add that the image quality is not the greatest (as was pointed out in a Mac|Life review).

Overall, a very nice product.

LOLLIFFE  I love the GUI, but wish it would record video, and not just pix.

XPLICIT  Sorry, forgot something. The mail sharing doesn't work, that's bad and Periscope needs 50 up to 80 % of the CPU ressources (C2D - 2.33 GHz), that's too much.

BRIANA  Hi DRAW,

Sorry to hear that you didn't like the GUI.

We at Freeverse are proud of the GUI of Periscope, and feel it fits well with the Mac OS X; it's simple, intuitive, and has a little bit of animation thrown in there as well.

btw, we are a Mac software company, first and foremost. ;-)
