DANA SUTTON  If you already have an older version of Skim, it's much easier to go Skim>Check for Updates and update from within the application than to follow the link given here, which only takes you to the Sourceforge home page (and then you have to hunt around to find Skim, lotsa luck).

MISHA  The Download Now link should download the file directly. Unfortunately one needs to go through a SourceForge redirect page, but it should be automatic (i.e. no more clicks needed).

MERRIMAC  This is really good software, but I stopped using it because I discovered that annotations are stored as separate files, rather than modifications of the PDF itself, which makes it difficult to share annotations with, for instance, PC users. If I do my annotations in Preview, on the other hand, the annotations become part of the PDF file itself and are transferable. (In fact, Preview annotations can even be further edited on PCs with software such as PDF X-Change.)

I'm sharing this point just so that people can make informed software choices on the basis of their needs. If I am wrong about this point, or if there is a simple workaround, please correct me.

HOFMAN  Skim allows you to save a copy of the PDF with the notes embedded inside the PDF, compatible with other programs, using the Export action.

STEVEN GOODHEART  HOFMAN, thanks for the great tip about how to export with comments embedded! Skim is awesome, and it's great to know one can do this when sharing with others.

HOFMAN  Supporting Tiger would mean NO new development for anybody, it only holds back improvements for everybody else (which is now almost everybody). So supporting Tiger would mean NO difference for Tiger users and a HUGE difference for everybody else. And you can still use version 1.2.7 on Tiger.

PLISTOFF  This may seem like a good app but it has a MAJOR BUG in Snow Leopard where your annotations, etc. could be lost. In addition, a Bug report has been filed on it and the developer says it's normal to expect data loss!?! (and I quote, "That's the way it is, it's not a bug.")

HOFMAN  My guess is that you're talking about saving a PDF with Skim notes with other applications that do not know about those notes, such as Preview or Acrobat. This is indeed not a bug but expected behavior. When you edit and save data with a particular application, than you will save only the data that application knows about, and you should expect to lose any data that application does not recognize. This is true for any type of data and any kind of application.

PLISTOFF  I will amend my previous statement… the Bug is Apple's not Skim's but I understand there are things that could be done to workaround the bug (and things that need to be done by the Skim team).

The bug has nothing to do with an application not supporting Skim specific features - it has to do with a bug introduced by Apple's programmers (confirmed as a bug by Apple "DTS" from what I've read). If this bug is not fixed (and it sounds like it will not be any time soon) then Skim data could easily be destroyed by this bug.

I can't believe you would take such a cavalier attitude concerning people's data. "Lost all your highlighting and annotations? Meh." For shame.

HOFMAN  There's nothing Skim can do about this, because you lose the notes when you save from another program. Skim has no way to change the way Preview or Acrobat saves data, that should be obvious. Remember, you also /see/ a PDF without (Skim) notes in Preview, so you should also expect to save it without notes when you do a save from Preview. That's /your/ fault, not Skim's. It's simple: save Skim data with Skim, and save Preview data with Preview. If you mix that up, you may expect problems.

JAYCE  The MacUpdate link for 1.2.7 doesn't work but a More Info click will take you to the developer's site for an easy download. And this excellent app is worth the extra few seconds.

GPROVAN  Great application.

I have two issues. Firstly, Skim doesn't deal well with PDFs that require an overprint preview, but I suppose neither does Preview.

The other issue is with printing. If I print multiple pages to a sheet (for example 4 business cards) Skim shrinks them to a tiny size, whereas they would fit perfectly well at full size. I have to tell it to print a 150% or something like that to get actual size.

Let me know if I'm wrong.

HOFMAN  Both are issues with the system, and are outside the control of Skim. The first is a shortcoming of Apple's PDFKit, the main engine behind Skim (and Preview). The second is about the system print services, which handles the print job based on your settings. My guess is that you also don't choose an appropriate paper size for your business cards, which almost certainly don't have your default paper size.

MACHSPEED5  I love this reader and its keyboard shortcuts that help me breeze through PDFs. I certainly use it for other things despite the developers intended "scientific papers" use.

I use the magnifying feature very often (double and tripe click) and its frustrating having to hold the mouse button down for extended periods of time. Could you guys build in a toggle somehow? Preferably with a keystroke shortcut. That would rock.

Another thing is that it zooms back out when i reach the edges of the screen while zoomed in. That must be an irritating bug i assume?

All-in-all, this is a great piece of software, and I heartily recommend it without pause.

5 out of 5 and many thanks.

DANA SUTTON  I rarely criticize the good people who manage the MU site, but here I have a bone to pick. Why describe Skim as a "PDF Reader and note-taker for scientific papers," which makes it sound like some kind of specialized app. meant only for four-eyed nerds in lab coats? This is a full-blown alternative to Adobe Acrobat, and i. m. h. o. it blows it away.

MACBOOKPRO  The developer states it is "designed to help you read and annotate scientific papers in PDF." Why criticize MU? The developer does further state it can be used for reviewing any PDF file. But, because of your rating, I am going to check it out. Thanks.

SAMPLER  MU uses the description that the developers use. See: http://sourceforge.net/projects/skim-app/

I, like you, also almost never open Adobe Reader now.

HOFMAN  Saying that it's designed for scientific papers is not the same as saying that this is its only use, but the latter is what the MU summary implies. The description on the Skim website also clearly qualifies the statement. So either please add a qualification to the summary or, better, remove the "for scientific papers" entirely. Also, I can propose a change for everything on the listings on MU except for this summary. Why not?
