DESCRIPTION
HoudahGeo: Know where you took that photo!

With HoudahGeo you may "pin" photos to locations where they were taken.

Just like an expensive GPS camera, HoudahGeo may store latitude, longitude and altitude information right within the image file - invisibly with no loss of quality. HoudahGeo writes EXIF, XMP and IPTC tags.

HoudahGeo also lets you to share your geotagged photos in Google Earth or publish them to Flickr.

One-stop geocoding for the Mac

HoudahGeo caters to two very different needs:
- Geocoding for archival purposes using EXIF, XMP and IPTC tags
- Geocoding for publishing to Google Earth or Flickr

GPS device: optional

HoudahGeo offers you many ways of geocoding your favorite photos:
- Automatic: Matches photos to GPS track logs and waypoints
- Using a Google Earth: Point to the desired location
- Using a map: Pick locations using the built-in map
- Precision: Attach photos to GPS waypoints
- Manual: Enter coordinates found on Google Earth, Wikipedia, ...

GPS device: supported

HoudahGeo connects directly to many brands and models of GPS track loggers. It also reads GPX and NMEA files created by third party software.

MICKSMAC  As the developer says, "one-stop geo-coding".

It does what it says, and does it well. Supports the 3 main image cataloguing/editing programs (iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom).

This program has been an excellent addition to my photography workflow. Recommended.

MICKSMAC  Does anyone know if this developer has folded or not?? I paid for a license 3 days ago and received an auto-mail saying my license would be sent "soon".

In 3 days I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY LICENSE or any acknowledgement to the 3 support emails I have sent.

Has anyone out there had any recent dealings with this developer? Please comment.

If the developer is reading: please send my license to me!

MICKSMAC  UPDATE: the developer is fine. He has been trying to send my license email, but it is being dropped somewhere between Switzerland and Australia!

Please don't let these issues affect your evaluation.

MICKSMAC  Matter has been completely resolved by the vendor. For some reason the license could not be delivered to my primary email; use of a second email service fixed this.

Thanks to the vendor for working on this over the weekend!

BTW, this is an excellent piece of software which I am delighted to own.

DRDUL  A very good app for geocoding photos. I code most photos by hand, as I am typically shooting in urban areas where my GPS logger's accuracy isn't very good. The ability to manually code photos using Google Earth is fantastic.

My only complaint is the small preview size when geocoding. A "quick look" feature within HoudahGeo would be helpful, as I often need to check the details of a photo to determine exactly where it was taken, in order to correctly geocode it.

DRDUL  I just discovered a great use for HoudahGeo that has nothing to do with GPS. I shot a bunch of photos with the camera set to the wrong date (2008 instead of 2009). The photos are in DNG format, and I couldn't find any way to edit the dates in the embedded EXIF data, other than the command line utility ExifTools. Then I remembered that HoudahGeo uses ExifTools to write EXIF data.

Sure enough, I was able to shift the dates in all my DNG files by one year, without adding GPS coordinates. To do this, I simply imported the images and in the "Camera Setup" dialog, indicated that the camera was running 31536000 seconds slow (the number of seconds in one year). The timestamps for all the photos were rest to the correct dates. I then wrote EXIF data to the original files.

3LUSIV3  This is an excellent application that works well with iphoto and my Garmin Nuvi 760. Highly recommended.

ROBERTCOOGAN  Very nice - previous versions were a bit unstable, but this one is solid. I agree with Mitch, dev is very quick to respond to help requests. A definite recommendation.

MITCH BICQUET  Excellent software that does many things right. I'm a registered user.

However I have 2 major gripes with it:

1. Concerning aperture integration, it only modifies the exif files of the local version, not the master. Thus if you make further image manipulation you will lose any info added by houdah.

2. It should have an interpolation technique (linear should be easy enough) to interpolate missing positions between 2 known positions. This allows to only activate and track with the gps once in a while on a long trip instead of having to constantly have the tracking device on in the field.

I should add that the developper is very willing to hep and quick to respond to inquiries.

Keep up the good work.

PIERRE BERNARD  Thanks for the feedback.

1. Aperture integration will be vastly improved in HoudahGeo 2.0. We are only days away from releasing this free upgrade.

2. HoudahGeo does perform time based extrapolation between track points. HoudahGeo 2.0 will let you adjust limits applied to extrapolation. Excessive extrapolation may result in nonsensical values.

GAVIN CUTSHALL  This is a software version of a sharp tool. It's refined to do one task very well ... in this case geocoding photos. There is nothing better on the Mac. It also makes my Sony GPS receiver more useful since I no longer have to use Bootcamp to run the utility.

CHRISTOPHER PATRICK TODD  I have always wanted a program like this. It is very intuitive and the fact that it can open iPhoto and Aperture libraries and write the information in files that you have placed in there makes it amazingly easy to use. Now all I need to do is buy one of those GPS thingies. :)

BARRIKADY  I have tried other Geo-Photo programs and they were complicated and not user friendly. HoudahGeo works well and is easy to use.

I use it with a Garmin 60Cx, LoadMyTracks either a Canon SD700is or a Canon 20D, and Google Earth.

Give it a spin!
