DESCRIPTION
ForkLift MacUpdate has decided to partner with the great folks at BinaryNights to expose to the world what we're calling "the next Transmit." We think that ForkLift's developers are adding features at a faster pace than the most popular FTP client on the Mac. We think Forklift has a strong chance of pulling out from the shadows and becoming the next major file transfer app on the Mac.

Forklift is a powerful file manager and ferociously fast FTP client clothed in a clean and versatile UI that offers the combination of absolute simplicity and raw power expected from a well-executed Mac software.

ForkLift will connect to any remote server FTP, SFTP, Amazon S3, WebDAV, the SMB, NIS and AFP shares on your local network, or your Bluetooth mobile phone- pretty much anything you can plug into or hook up to a Mac. ForkLift also carries a complete toolbox for managing your files, including Folder Synchronization, Batch Renaming, Archive handling, Application deleter, editing files over remote connections and many more. All these power features are packaged into a Finder-like, dual-pane interface that delivers superior workflow while remaining absolutely familiar to use, along with QuickLook, Spotlight search and all.

Key features:

  • Dual-pane view
  • Connect to FTP/SFTP, FTP/TLS, Bluetooth
  • Folder Synchronization
  • Tabs
  • Archives: Rar, Zip, Tar, Gz
  • Amazon S3 support
  • WebDAV support
  • Remote edit and preview
  • Spotlight and Filters
  • Growl support
  • Favorites and Favorite Groups
  • QuickLook local and remote files
  • Droplets
One of MacUpdate's favorite features is called "FXP." It allows you to copy files from one remote FTP server to another, without first downloading it to your Mac and then uploading it to the destination server. As you can imagine, this direct connect ability can save a ton of time moving files between servers and making fast backups.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  I bought this app as part of the December 2007 MacUpdate Promo Bundle and in all that time it has been steadily maintained and consistently improved by the developers, yet they haven't once asked for more money.

Contrast that with two other great programs that were sold in the same bundle:

1. RapidWeaver, who months later, bumped up the version number and wanted an upgrade fee from its users.

2. Yep, who went for a ridiculously long amount of time (a year, I think) before doing any maintenance whatsoever on their app (so long, in fact, I wondered if it had been abandoned) and then recently had the nerve to bump the version up and also stick their hands out for an upgrade fee.

Now don't get me wrong: I believe in supporting the company's whose products I use, but I also don't like to feel like I've been had.

All three of these apps are excellent at what they do, but if you want excellence AND devs who are honest, hard-working, and care about their users, then look no further. ForkLift delivers. ForkLift is, imo, the best ftp app around and it's well-worth the investment. You will get your money's worth if you buy this app.

JRIETZ  My task for the day(s) was to transfer about 6 GB of websites from one host to a new host. I dreaded the thought since my cable is slow uploading. I've actually owned ForkLift for a while, but had not used it until this task remembering it could be logged into two ftp sites at the same time within the split window. It is unfortunate that neither host supports the FXP protocol...

I did have some problems and was unable to tell if it was one of the hosts or my cable, which throttles uploads. Somewhere along the line FL did start crashing pretty far into a large transfer and I was having a dickens of a time managing which folders got updated and which didn't (the Sync Browsing really helped). I sent in a bug report and included the crash log file.

I was really surprised when someone wanted to iChat with me - someone I didn't know. Within a few lines I found it was Mudi from BinaryNights! Mudi provided a lot of suggestions and got me going - I was using a G4 and they had not fully tested the new version with one. The next day, Mudi contacted me again and said they found the bug after they setup a G4 and tested it themselves.

I'm an old Fetch guy, but I've switched to ForkLift as my primary ftp application, not only the unique features (today and for the future), but for the support.

Thanks!

Jim

CAINER  @LARCENOUS

Other FTP apps have been allowing editing with an app of your choice for years, even before ForkLift ever existed.

ZEB B  The latest version of Fetch also has the ability to edit in the app of one's choice.

M_FLO  ForkLift is a nice file browser and FTP/SFTP/WebDAV client, but I think the price is a bit steep. $20 or $25 seems much more reasonable, considering the competition for this kind of app. I'm glad I bought it as part of a software bundle -- I like it but could not see paying full price for it.

LEE123  There are so many great reviews of this product but it locks up every time I try it. This is pretty rare on my laptop, it is usually really stable. No offense to those who love it. I will probably try again. I am a sucker for file managers.

ANONYMOUS  If you haven't submitted a bugreport for these lockups yet, then please do by all means to bugreport at binarynights dot com.

I'm being redundant here, but can't help noting that this is a BETA release. Bugs are expected.

CAINER  To the dev: If you make a public beta release then you've got to expect people to report bugs in public places. Make a private beta if you don't want that.

VGOKLANI  Snow Leopard builds have been out for the last year, why is the developer releasing these "half-baked" hotfixes? Has he been on vacation for the past year?

DEV  Yeah, I must admit we didn't anticipate that the switch to Snow Leopard will require so many things to be fixed. We've been absolutely immersed working on ForkLIft 2.0 for the last 5-6 months, and when we took a look at the SL update about two months ago, it turned out that there are some major technical obstacles (see our forums and blogs for details).

Plus, I've been on vacation.

DEV  @ODYSSEUS

Well, this is harsh criticism, and we accept it.

True, it does happen at times that some emails are left unanswered. There could be any number of reasons for this:

- the bug report needs testing, and this can result in surprise turns that simply get us wandering about the code, and forgetting about our original bug tracking mission.

- some more urgent thing may get us off track

- or we may simply have let the email slide down the list, until it got out of our view.

In any of these cases, please accept our apologies

In the case at hand, we simply couldn't reproduce the problem with DAV.

I'm sure these things happen in the best companies, especially in a small dev unit like ours. Still, we try to do our best.

TRANCE  Still there:

major bug with copying from FAT filesystems with special character / will result in

Error: bad file name passed to routine: there may be no bad names in the final system! (-37)

so, obviously, still has not been fixed, and this is not a beta, and I am posting it here so others are aware of it

DEV  Well, we've not been able to reproduce this error so far, but we'll be checking it out to see if the fault is with us.

And no, this issue was not addressed in the 1.7.1 update.

TEORIC  Well, yummy is not usable as a file manager, is it? Furthermore, it does not easily permit to choose ‘commanderÂ’ type keyboard shortcuts.

So, open your eyes, there are differences (even if they may be irrelevant to you).

But of course, neither programme beats the flexibility of the midnight commander in a terminal, but sometimes clicking is quite nice. ;-)
