DESCRIPTION

VacuumMail is an AppleScript application that performs the "vacuum" command on Apple Mail's underlying SQLite EnvelopeIndex database. This must not be done while Mail is running, so VacuumMail will first check to see if Mail is running and if so, it will close Mail (giving you a chance to opt out, of course!). If Mail was running when the process begins, VacuumMail will restart Mail when it's finished, and will let you know how much it was able to compact the database.

VacuumMail is designed to be incorporated into an automated maintenance routine and run at regular intervals. This is the purpose for the Launch Agent included in this install package.

The Launch Agent utilizes Apple's launchd process to schedule regular vacuuming of Mail using VacuumMail. You can use the included Lingon application to edit the Launch Agent to your own specifications.

You can, of course, run VacuumMail interactively if you need to do so, and it makes a great addition to your Finder toolbar. After installation, you will find VacuumMail and Lingon in your /Applications/Utilities folder, and the Launch Agent in your ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder. (The installer will make one for you if you don't have one yet.)

WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.96: The latest release corrects a bug in the installer introduced in VacuumMail 0.9.5. The new version, 0.9.6, ensures that the /Users/Shared folder retains the correct permissions after the installer runs. There are no other changes in this release. If youÕve installed VacuumMail 0.9.5, you can use DiskUtility to check and fix permissions on your system, or run the new installer.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

DRDUL  I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and from Outlook to Apple Mail (via Outlook2Mac). Being the paranoid tinfoil-hat-wearing person that I am, I keep an archive of three years worth of mail. VacuumMail saved my bacon, as Apple Mail was choking on the huge number of message I imported and then started moving around. I use it regularly (it also runs automatically) to keep Mail "fit and trim." Highly recommended!

ZANGIEF  Same here, I've used this app for a long time and love it.

"No, I can't throw that out, what if I need that in six months!"

TUISHIMI  Works as advertised and my mail runs faster and smoother. Not only that, since I ran this I no longer suffer from the "can't connect to server" problem with mail!!! I don't know if it is coincidence or something else, but I don't care. I am so happy I don't have to go offline/online all the time now.

APPLEDOGX  WOW!!! Incredible and surprising. Mail was a bit sluggish to start on my Mac for many months. After running this quick utility, now it starts up in two seconds maximum!!!!

This product is an example of simplicity being elegance. Kudos to the author.

EAN  Fantastic. Does its job quickly and Mail is now noticeably faster launching and navigating around mailboxes. A progress bar and prettier dialogs would be nice, but the 'architectural' design, complete with launchd support, is superb.
