DESCRIPTION

MacCleanse securely scans your system for activity and erases the desired information.

Whether you've been gift shopping online, discussing confidential business matters, visiting inappropriate web sites, or just want to clean out your system, MacCleanse is your savior. Unlike some other privacy protection tools which go through your system with brute force, MacCleanse has been thoroughly tested and only removes the necessary files, and reports all errors.

MacCleanse also contains enhanced features for specific applications like Acquisition, Adium, AIM, aMSN, Azureus, Bit Torrent, Colloquy, FireFox 2 & 3, iCab, iChat, ICQ, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, MPlayer, MSN Messenger, Netscape, OmniWeb, Opera, Preview, QuickTime, Safari, Skype, Transmission, Unison, Xtorrent, and Yahoo Messenger. These enhanced features allow you to pick and choose what exactly to remove from the application - be it only auto-fill values from Safari or the recent download history in Xtorrent. EGN  MacCleanse keeps deleting directories in /var/log which it should not delete when cleansing. One example is /var/log/apache2. The specific contents of the apache2 directory should be deleted according to what is checked for deletion in the MacCleanse options but not the whole directory. This causes the web server to stop working on next boot or at the earliest startup and for errors to be written to the system log (Console) every 10 secs. Have reported this bug before; was apparently fixed but got reintroduced in the latest version.

If you encounter this problem, as root, create the /var/log/apache2 directory again and restart your WebSharing from System Preferences->Sharing until this is fixed or disable the MacCleanse option to cleanse these logs until Koingo puts out a fix.

KOINGO SOFTWARE  Sorry, but the latest version does not delete this directory. We've just confirmed this. You may be suffering the consequence of the older version. Please open your Terminal and perform:

sudo mkdir /private/var/log/apache2

sudo touch /private/var/log/apache2/error_log

sudo touch /private/var/log/apache2/access_log

EGN  Better yet, deleted the app with CleanApp, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled. I had previously reconstructed my Apache log files by manually creating the directory and restarting Apache to have it create the log files.

After reinstall the problem has gone away. Now only the contents of the log files get cleansed. I even put MC through Xslimmer thinking that might have been the cause of the issue but no, even after slimming MC worked OK again.

So although I have a video of the first incident where the apache2 directory was deleted when cleansing, after reinstalling that does not happen. If someone has had this happen I'd like to know why it did.

So, sorry if I cried wolf! The app is very good and I not only use MacCleanse but the whole kit from Koingo.

THEBRIX2008  Having tried them all (literally!) MacCleanse is the easiest to use for day-to-day cleaning as, unlike Onyx, Cocktail or TinkerTool System, it has a one-pane interface. Open it, Command-E and that's it - no presses on tabs or buttons are required. The interaction can be made even slicker by removing prompts to restart Finder or to close the application when cleaning is done.

It also appears to clean more options than (the totality of tabs on) these tools - it was still finding some logs, in particular, after combinations of them had been used.

What it deliberately doesn't do is system, rather than application, cleaning and fixing (permissions, preferences, kernel caches, databases, DS_Store files etc.); any of those three applications will suffice.

SWO  I use this app regularly, though it is powerful and requires a bit of understanding of it's functions (which is why if I don't understand something, I leave it alone till I do or am feeling adventurous).

Some of my concerns seem to have been address in this update, though I can't stand to look at the Mac Cleanse icon.

Does anyone know if there are any alternative icons out there? It doesn't have to be for Mac Cleanse, per se, it just has to fit the app's purpose.

LEEJANDSUE  i've sent a couple of emails to the software developer regarding issues with using this program in leopard. it has been at least 3 business days, with no reply so far. basically the program locks up when i try to securely erase an item, and have to restart. i could not find any documentation with step by step instructions on how to use this program. maybe they will get back to me sometime after the holidays.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  From the developer's site, main page:

"Christmas Break

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Our staff will be on Christmas break from Monday, December 17 through Monday, January 7. Sales are automatically processed, and therefore license codes will still be sent out. Also, technical support during this period will be handled on a low-priority schedule. All other services have been temporarily suspended until we return to work full time after the break."

SETTANI  I have to apologize to the developer. I found out that I didn't have some software install properly and that was the reason I was having problems. I reinstalled the software and Mac Cleanse works perfectly and it is a really wonderful piece of software Try it and you'll Buy it. Thanks again for all you hard work on the software.

SETTANI  I have not been able to use this software running MOS X version 10.5 It continually crashes when you select all options to clean. I've contacted the developer twice and 1.0.8 was the response but it still crashes. Wait until a update is release before you download this to run if you have 10.5

MACNEWS  Very nicely done.

I would, however, like to see the app, while idle, be reduced to using zero cpu cycles.
