DESCRIPTION

MacFUSE is a FUSE-Compliant File System Implementation Mechanism for Mac OS X. MacFUSE implements a mechanism that makes it possible to implement a fully functional file system in a user-space program on Mac OS X (10.4 and above). It aims to be API-compliant with the FUSE (Filesystem in USErspace) mechanism that originated on Linux. Therefore, many existing FUSE file systems become readily usable on Mac OS X. The core of MacFUSE is in a dynamically loadable kernel extension.

How FUSE-compliant is MacFUSE? Well, enough so that many popular FUSE file systems can be easily compiled and work on Mac OS X--often out of the box. Examples of file systems that work have been tested (to varying degrees) include sshfs, ntfs-3g (read/write NTFS), ftpfs (read/write FTP), wdfs (WebDAV), cryptofs, encfs, bindfs, unionfs, beaglefs (yes, including the entire Beagle paraphernalia), and so on.

Now the first version of NTFS wrtiteable filesystem is available; it is called NTFS-3G (http://idisk.mac.com/shadowofged/Public/Software/NTFS-3G/NTFS-3G%201.0%20(Full).dmg).

DORKYPANTS  Snow Leopard needs ver. 2.1.5 beta (or later). The only access to downloading it is to use the prefpane for ver. 2.0.3.2 and check the "Show Beta Versions" checkbox, then check for updates.

DP8  The installer for MacFUSE installs the preference pane as well. MacUpdate Desktop is correctly identifying the download needed to install the software, including the preference pane.

CERNIUK  Worked right out of the gate with MacFusion as a file system FTP solution (aka disk on desktop). Exactly how the Finder should have worked in the first place. I am so tired of the Font DA Mover approach to FTP in Mac OS I could scream. MacFusion and MacFUSE come to the rescue! If this thing enables use of NTFS systems, wow!

****.

SURFSPIRIT  Of all the great and positive reviews from macupdate users, I believe this is a good application, but it's buggy on my system, I am running a MacBook Core Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.6 and it fails to copy large files above 300MB to my network iMac DV and to pen drives, it was the first thing I uninstall after the problems started and problem solved. So it has some kind of bug in this file system extension. Don't what this messes with, I think I will wait for another releases before trying it again.

MR650  2.0.3.2 allows my computer to sleep automatically according to the settings in the Energy Saver Preference Pane. The last version of MacFuse that I installed kept my machine and display on, regardless of power settings.

DAVID4MAC  Just got a new hard drive - in NFTS. Running 10.5 and Parallels. Could not write to the DISK on the MAC - downloaded MacFuse and Whamo - it's like I have a large flash drive! Just what I wanted. I can copy, write and safe in both Windows XP and on the MAC... very cool!

Thanks - David

ZOFO  I wish the documentation was clearer..

I had to do a lot of digging around and found that to write NTFS you ALSO have to download a separate "plugin"

Find it here http://www.ntfs-3g.org/index.html#download

BARQSX  After installing MacFUSE, my Macbook Pro fails to sleep when idle (eventhough my Energy Saver settings is set to sleep after a few minutes of idleness). After uninstalling MacFUSE, my Macbook Pro goes to sleep as normal! I'm running Leopard 10.5.2.

Interestingly, I tried Paragon NTFS (another program that allows you to read/write to NTFS formatted drives) and experienced the same problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
