DESCRIPTION

Storyist is a powerful story development tool for novelists and screenwriters.

With an intuitive interface that puts you in control, Storyist provides:

  • A word processor with a page layout view and support for headers, footers, and style sheets.
  • A storyboard with customizable story sheets for tracking your plot, characters, and settings.
  • A project manager with fast, project-wide search capabilities to keep your writing organized and accessible.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.3.8 addresses several stability and usability issues. Specifically:

  • Positioning the cursor after a section separator and pressing return now preserves the notes for the following section.
  • Storyist now properly logs the date when creating a backup. Previously, it would not record the date if you chose not to enter a comment, resulting in a blank date field in the Revert to Backup dialog.
  • When Storyist finds notebook entries that don't appear to belong to the project any longer, it now prompts you to either move them to the trash or add them back to the project. Previously, it would simply delete them.
  • The main view no longer displays notebook entries after they are deleted from the project. Previously, they would remain on screen in certain circumstances.
  • Pressing Return when the cursor is positioned on the last line of a page now scrolls so that the cursor remains visible. Previously, the cursor would be positioned off screen.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

EJI  $59? Really? $59?

I saw this pop up in my MacUpdate RSS and thought it might be useful. So I was going to give it a spin, but there's no way I'm going to pay $59 for story outline software with a few extra bells and whistles, no matter how nice it looks.

I really like the corkboard visual layout with photos for characters, but for my purposes, it's better to create a slimmed-down version without any word processing functions for, say, $20. That way, I can stick with Pages, Word, Bean or WriteRoom for writing and use Storyist exclusively for conceptualization and outlines.  (Version 1.3.5)

THOTH-2  First let me say that I'm in the Storyist Beta Users group and have been using the product for several months now. That said, I have to point out that it simply isn't a general purpose word processor. It isn't ment to be. It does, however, seamlessly merge word processing and database management features in an effort to solve a problem most WPs don't address: minimizing distractions from the creative process. What Storyist does is make it simple to create, maintain and refer back to all story elements and notes without breaking your train of thought. MS Word attempts to do this (halfheartedly) with NoteBook View. Dramatica tries to do this in a rigid and overly complicated process (IMHO). Storyist handles the data and keeps out of the writer's way. It's not perfect but it does what it claims to do better than any other WP I've seen.  (Version 1.2)

GAZMAN  Can't open .rtf, Word documents or import projects from other applications, e.g. CopyWrite. Until these things happen this program won't be finding a permanent home in my Applications folder.  (Version 1.0)

LORD LIGHTNING  This is strangely familiar. Quite like Scrivener. A bit like Avenir and a bit like Jer's NW. It even feels a bit like Montage. The templates will attract users because they are visual and well crafted. The Wiki link approach will also attract users. Is it a worthy competitor for Scrivener? Not even remotely. Pretty though!  (Version 1.0)
