DESCRIPTION
OmniGrowl aims to provide many practical notifications through Growl in a single application.

OmniGrowl is also an expandable framework for sending Growl notifications for applications that do not natively support Growl.

  • Nofications for upcoming iCal events, To-Dos, Birthdays, etc
  • Notificatons for Address Book Birthdays
  • Notificatons of iTunes track changes
  • News headlines / RSS
  • Yahoo Weather & Traffic
  • Flight status for flights entered in iCal
  • Concert notifications from Pollstar and last.fm
  • Customizable support for log monitoring
  • More!
WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.7:
  • Added option to check internet for iTunes artwork.
  • Above works even when not showing "full notifications" so it doesn't choke iTunes.
  • Added new iTunes script addition to add downloaded art to the current album in iTunes. This makes OmniGrowl a decent artwork finder in its own right.
  • Added new iTunes script plugin that can be triggered by iTunes track changes.
  • Included an iTunes GeekTool template for the new iTunes plugin that will display iTunes artwork and track info on the desktop with GeekTool 3 installed and some minimal configuration. (See Advanced Info.)
  • Since OmniGrowl handles everything, this is a much better solution for GeekTool users than anything currently available (just try it).
  • Includes Growl Framework 1.2b4.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later, Growl.

SAJDAK70  Good work, nice piece of software. I would like to say thanks to developers for their hard working. Maybe a website could be more modern and more attractive. :-)

GCOGHILL  I agree on the website comment, the MacUpdate page is far more informative than the developers own webpage for OmniGrowl.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Thanks for the comments. I'm aware the web site needs redesign but its never been a priority. I'd rather focus on making useful applications than web design, as it's just me out here. Still I'll take it under advisement!

GCOGHILL  I suppose it's one of those things where if you can't even find a full feature list on the apps own webpage, you start to wonder if the app itself might be unfinished. Also might make one wonder about support issues.

I've demoed OmniGrowl in the past and it's a very nice application. But had I stumbled across it outside of MacUpdate, I might not even have given it another look.

Something as simple as a changelog, a basic overview of features and at least a full list of the main features added in the newest version might be a bit more reassuring. A screen shot or two would also help.

Hope this doesn't come across as negative, it's purely constructive criticism. The app itself seems great, it's just the "packaging" that might turn some people off.

Just the reply from the developer bumps this up a notch in my book, sometimes I don't even get replies from (or get very delayed responses from) devs to which I've paid money for licenses and contacted for support.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  WoodenBrain Developer: Some days ago I noticed your website changes, and I believe all your apps' pages here at MU have had their associated URLs updated to reflect the changes you've made.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Thanks for your encouragement (and prodding ;-) on this. Since I last posted the notice I've further improved the web site: the side bars now all have roll-over buttons and the web forum is complete. Now back to the thing that matters: product development!

Thanks to MacUpdate for so quickly updating the product links. How DO you guys keep "track" of all this? ;-)

ARCHAEOGEEK  Excellent app, nicely updated, however, I admit that for all its features, it just lacks the thing or two I'm looking for and for which I'd fork - ichat and mail support; mail growling at least works temporarily with property list hacks, but the newer version of chax is, well, still alpha, and still very unstable, and with Chax 2 not working in SL, it makes a rather important thing to me (growl provides better deaf access than the built-in deaf access feature in the OS) unavailable.

KLAGRECA  I've paid to support omnigrowl, which I love. Then, I check the "I've supported" checkbox, yet Omnigrowl still pops up growl messages asking me to support. What gives?

STEVEN GOODHEART  This is one of the best programs I've bought in the last year. It is tremendously versatile in terms of the kinds of pop-up notifications you can set and is my favorite Growl add-on, without a doubt. The programmer was right on top of Snow Leopard and changes to Growl itself, and best of all, the program keeps evolving...like the new iTunes features this update has added. Love it! Can't recommend enough.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  It has been reported by several people that OmniGrowl 3.0 is opening its preference window at startup even though that option is not checked. I consider this top priority for a fix, but unfortunately I am on vacation until July 3 and have no access to the source to fix it. It will be fixed by July 7 or earlier. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If there are any other issues besides this one please report them to woodenbrain at kagi dot com so a proper maintenance release can be produced ASAP after my return.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Hi... As usual folks, please email support with bug reports. On the day of release developers may check these pages but after that probably not.

That error MIGHT be caused if you have no "me" card in address book that matches your full login name. (which should be set up when you install any version of OS X). I believe I have fixed it now and uploaded another version (silent update here). Please re-download and then e-mail woodenbrain at kagi dot com if the problem persists. Thanks much.

STROB  I don't yet know the value of this application. However, I do have a problem with it. In the short amount of time I have tried it, I have woken up a few times to find the screen plastered with "SMART Status Warning! The SMART status of your startup disk is Verified".

First off I use SMARTReporter to tell me if anything goes wrong with my startup disk so I don't need OmniGrowl telling me it is OK. Second, I don't need my screen half plastered with these notifications which need to be deleted one by one. Very annoying, developer. Can you fix?

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  it should not show any SMART notification if the disk is verified. there must be something unusual with your setup. Please email woodenbrain at kagi dot com and we'll look into it on Monday (leaving town for weekend). in meantime, go to Growl preference pane and configure OmniGrowl and disable the SMART notification.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Hi Scott. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix this issue because I need more info if this persists. Do you have an English system? What is the actual message that comes up? If the SMART status has the word "Verified" in it no notification is supposed to appear. Please email woodenbrain at kagi dot com. Thanks.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  It shouldn't be necessary to delete any older version from your system entirely, but that's always good advice. what IS necessary is to quit any older version before launching the new one, and if you have added an older version to your login items at a different location, make sure the old one is removed first.

If you follow the install instructions included (quit old version and replace then launch) it should be fine.

F451  I did quit before installing, but OG kept giving me an error notice and bringing up the OG's preference window. I should have noted the exact error message, but deleting all of OG and starting clean fixed matters.
