X Lossless Decoder (XLD) is a tool for Mac OS X that is able to decode/convert/play various 'lossless' audio files. The supported audio files can be split into some tracks with cue sheet when decoding.
XLD supports the following formats:
(Ogg) FLAC (.flac/.ogg)
Monkey's Audio (.ape)
Wavpack (.wv)
TTA (.tta)
Apple Lossless (.m4a) [10.4 and later]
AIFF, WAV, etc
Other formats supported by Libsndfile are also decodable. XLD uses not decoder frontend but library to decode, so no intermediate files are generated. All of the supported formats can be directly split with the cue sheet. XLD also supports so-called 'embedded' or 'internal' cue sheet.
Currently you can choose output format from WAVE,AIFF and Raw PCM. In addition, you can choose Ogg Vorbis (aoTuV), MPEG-4 AAC (QuickTime/CoreAudio), MP3 (LAME), Apple Lossless and FLAC in the GUI version.
When people who are new to Macs ask me about essential Mac apps, XLD is always at the top of my list. Stable, easy to use, and free. You can't get better than that. If you're not satisfied with just playing .mp3s, you need this app. It's awesome.
Tested and working fine in Snow Leopard. (Version 20090829)
DUKERAUL Trying to find a reliable flac to mp3 converter was a pain and when reading the reviews on yet another crap converter someone mentioned XLD. The lack of a GUI is weird but it worked like a charm. Be sure to go into the preferences and choose MP3 as the output.
I really like the importing directly into iTunes. Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you! (Version 20090320)
To use, check "Encode with HE-AAC" checkbox in the option dialog of MPEG-4 AAC encoder. In HE-AAC encoder, true VBR is not available and available bitrate is limited (24-80kbps).
DOCC I was in more or less the same situation as several others have described here: trouble decoding FLAC files and having XLD hanging on the second file. (At that point my whole system would hang.)
This surprised me since XLD has performed flawlessly from the first time I tried it.
Removing WindowShade and the APE file it installs fixed all the problems I was having. Those Haxies just don't seem worth the bother. (Version 20090320)

DROPS You are right GULLI, I have the same problem on my PPC with Tiger (10.4.11).
Apple Lossless can't be re-converted to lame mp3 with XLD,
wether I try a batch conversion or drop single files onto XLD, it doesn't work.
I think XLD produces (maybe minor) corruption in its Apple Lossless files and therefore can't convert them later to lame.
Is there any fast and simple workaround known to get it work in XLD? (Version 20090320)
