LEO KUZNETSOV  ROBK asked:

>According the the X-Losses Decoder Project, ZiPeg breaks UNIX permissions during the extraction of an archive.

>See http://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html

>Is this true? (Version 2.3.0.896)

It was true prio to version 2.3

I verified that version 2.3 handles tar permissions correctly. I downloaded applications from TMKK XLD and successfully extracted it with correct permissions. Everything seems to work. (I notified tmkk about the fix).

GARY30  Nice little app that offers a function useful to those of us who have adopted zip and put sit behind us. Not too complicated, not to simple. Just right. Thanks!

While developer recommends putting the app in the Applications folder, it also seems to work when put in the Utilities folder on my machine. Okay, call me compulsive.

TOMIS  Recommendation: Avoid

Incredibly buggy. Refused to run from the disk image. Lots of interface glitches, windows popping up randomly and unexpectedly. Very slow. Feels like a Java port.

Doesn't respect the user's wishes. Annoyingly presented a window asking to be set as the default app for numerous archive formats, closed the window, only to discover that it had set its self as the default app!

Upon first opening a ZIP archive it loaded the file browser and loaded the file previews, then proceeded to close the file browser, open a "User Agreement" and open an "sample archive"!

It's really too bad. The core functionality is great. Everything else about the app is utter junk. Needs to be re-written as a proper Cocoa app.

GARY30  Hey there sport,

None of your complaints amounts to a hill of beans. It's a little app that does what it says it will do and helps you get going. How about you write and post a FREE Cocoa app and then see how you feel as you read ridiculous complaints from the clueless.

AEKA78  This software handles PC-Compatible ZIP files really well! Other rival compression software ended up giving me errors when extracting a specific directory of files.

Well done! Highly recommended.

****.

JLARO  The mini-survey asks: Which of these features should be implemented first? Before anything: improved launch speed. On my G4-733 it takes 24 seconds before I can do anything, versus 8 for The Unarchiver. And one-click expansion is not possible because by definition it's made to show the content first.

However being able to view the content of zip files before expanding them, and being able to expand only selected items inside, are very useful features which I have been looking for for a long time.

Most of the time I want to expand archives without first checking their content, so it won't be my default archive expander, but I'll keep it in the Finder's tool bar for special situations.

LEO KUZNETSOV  I believe 24 seconds was due to a bug in an earlier version. It was spent downloading plugin for extra formats. New version is available from http://www.zipeg.com and has plugin already embeded in it. Please give it a try and let me know if it did not fix the problem.

Regards,

JLARO  Now down to 19 seconds to launch with version 1.4.0.645 (and lots of other programs running). Since this is not my main unzipping program for reasons previously stated I can live with it, although it's still annoying for a seemingly simple utility. I have a hunch this is written in Java, is it so?

LEO KUZNETSOV  Dear jlaro,

I really appreciate speed measurements.

Yes - Zipeg is Java UI front for excellent p7zip back end engine (kudos to Igor Pavlov).

I've tried on my MPB (2GB, Intel) as well as on two Minis (1GB, Intel/PPC) and on both it starts in sub-second period of time. All three systems are 10.4.x running Java 1.5. What is your configuration?

I would be interested to understand why it is slow on G4 and how to speed up the start up time. If you want to help please drop me email thru http://www.zipeg.com/mac.support.html I will be willing to make a special version for you with startup profile log and see if I can optimize something.

Thank you very much for helping to make Zipeg better.
