Fan Control... Do you think your MacBook or MacBook Pro is running too hot? Then give Fan Control a try. Some MacBooks (Pro) are just to hot for daylong use. Fan Control adjusts the minimum fan speed depending on the current CPU temperature. For safety, it leaves the original automatic fan speed control intact.
Mac OS X 10.4 or later, MacBook

SNERDWARE I've generated 2 new versions of Fan Control, one for the Intel-based iMacs and one for the MacBook/MacBook Pro which has some extended control capabilities over the original Lobotomo Fan Control version. For screenshots and (free) downloads (with source code) see: The iMac version allows separate sensors to drive the control of each of its 3 fans and the extended MacBook/MacBook Pro version allows fan-control via the CPU and/or GPU temperatures (useful if you play games on your laptop). There are also some other minor enhancements (see the ReadMe files). I've also tried to make it easy to adapt the source code for other systems ... e.g., a version for the Mac Pro that uses different sensors to control different fans (or groups of fans). Hope these are useful to others. (Version 1.2)

HUBBERBUBMAN wow - gotta try it out! If it does what you say, then you´re my hero!! I´ve had so much trouble with FanControl but I still I need it since my MacBookPro is running really hot without. Thanks in advance! - I´ll report if it works good (better)! (Version 1.2)

HUBBERBUBMAN I wanted to add to my previous posting that I could identfy FanConrol as the culprit. I deinstalled it completely, reset the SMC and ran my MacBookPro 2 weeks without it. None of the earlier described symptoms showed up. Though the Computer was a lot hotter. So I decided to reinstall FanControl and deal with it´s failures. Just have one right now. However. If someone can help me, please speak up!

MACUPDATE ADMIN I don't know whether you've tried this utility instead of the one you're using, or if this will even work on your Mac, but you might want to try it: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23411/icyclone (Version 1.2)

HUBBERBUBMAN FanControl - Fans out of control!!! First of all - FanControl is a brilliant product which is essential for those using a laptop. But i´ve experienced quite strange problems lately: The symptoms are the following: Sometimes without any indication of cpu- stress or high ram- use, high temperatures of the CPU or GPU, the fans start speeding up until their maximum (6000m rpm) and remain in that condition forever or quite a long time. FanControl does not seem to work at this time . It´s readings do not correspond to the behavior of the fans. Almost everytime i have to shut down the computer an let it rest for several minutes. A immedient restart would leave the fans spinning at the same (maximum) speed. I´m running a MacBook Pro (santa rosa, 2007), Mac OS X 10.5.3. I think FanControl needs an update - pleaze Mr. Developer?? thanks for your help in advance (Version 1.2)

IBELL63 DO NOT USE this app! This app will permanently effect your system's fan control settings even after you uninstall it. I uninstalled it and my system no longer changes it's fan settings according to the load automatically. For the time being, I am using smcFanConrol to keep my system from overheating. From what I have found, the way to fix this is to restore the firmware for your machine, but I have not been able to find the proper firmware disc for my Particular MacBook Pro, (MacBookPro3,1), so I havn't been able to restore my firmware. If anyone can help me, please reply. Much help would be greatly appreciated. Mac Update should pull this app, and the developer should pull it until this potentially catastrophic issue is fixed. NEONBLUE2 Been working fine for me for over a year. Do you have a C2D Mac and follow the uninstallation instructions to the letter? Just trying to help by covering all bases. (Version 1.2)

IBELL63 I have a MacBook Pro, it is a C2D mac. I have the revision immediately before the current revision. I did follow the uninstall correctly. Just recently, however the machine did start automatically adjusting it's fan speed again. I have no idea why, maybe it just took a few restarts? (Version 1.2)

SWEEDIGEL I have exactly the same problem. And I can't restore the firmware. Here is my topic about it on macrumors : http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=484965 Don't know what to do... hell I'll NEVER install this app again (Version 1.2)

FRANK I have EXACTLY the same problem -- fans can get out of ANY control, like right now. Sometimes, like now, no amount of re-start works at all! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh (Version 1.2)

GREGLYNN Fan Control 1.2 works great on my MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo 2.0GHz. Was running 164F or hotter prior, now when set to better energy savings plus the fan control, I am seeing consistent 144F, which is a huge win on longevity for certain components such as the battery and hard drive. Fans run 3500-4200 speeds, so there is white noise whereas prior there was no noise, but in a room where the tv is on, you barely hear the fans and the sound is not annoying. Also the top area around the track pad is not heating up like it used to, another thermal win. I left the baseline fan speed at 1500, reduced the max temp to 158 and left the low temp at 122. Now fan life may be lessened, but with a 3 yr warranty, let em fail :-) They really should not fail if the QC was done right, but fans are a weak point in PCs. (Version 1.2)

KEZ using this or smcFancontrol (also Free) with CoolBook to undervolt my MBP CD I can sit with it on my lap until the battery runs flat and not cook my legs!. Coolbook also extends battery life due to less power usage. Give it a try and trust me in a mobile situation you will be amazed. (Version 1.2)

JNAEVE I recently got a MacBook Pro 15" C2D for business use and have noticed it seemed to run hot. After reading several articles about fan control, I followed one of the links and downloaded Fan Control 1.1. Great little utility and interesting how it graps out the fan RPM vs machine temp, etc., nicely written and fairly easy to use. However, after running it for about a month, I noticed that the MacBook would randomly run the fans at maximum RPM for no apparent reason and once I launched the Fan Control utility under System Preferences, it seemed to start cooling off. I have no idea what caused this over heating issue or the fans just randomly spinning at higher RPMs with no heat issues, its hard to tell. That being said, I also noticed that sometimes when I close the lid of my MBP to put it in my bag, I seems to keep running and one day, I noticed it had been running for about an hour and when I pulled it back out, it was HOT! I had to do a hard shut down and pray nothing was damaged. Since that time, I had my MBP running on my desk with it open and after it had been asleep for several hours, noticed the fan was on and seemed to be warm as well. I again launched System Preferences and looked at the Fan Control utility and once loaded, the MBP seemed to quiet down again and return to normal. I don't know the reasons for why I'm seeing such eratic behavior but they all seem to lead to Fan Control so I had to unload it and look for alternatives. This utility may work for some and maybe is only intended for MacBooks and not MBP's but I didn't catch that in the setup. In either case, I'm going to refrain from loading it again and if you have an MBP, I'd seriously consider the alternatives.

EVVN Since I installed this program, my fans have been running loudly even at low speeds on my new white Macbook. After completely uninstalling it, 1800 rpm (and even 1500 rpm) are very noticeably loud, where previously at those speeds they were pretty much completely silent. I was wondering if there is some way that I can restore my Macbook to the way it was before, since uninstalling it and then installing smcFanControl to restore apple's defaults didn't seem to take the problem away. It still runs cool, so the fans must obviously be working, I just don't understand why they're so much louder now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! (Version 1.1)
