DESCRIPTION
Ping! From reading the comments below, it appears that the ReadMe isn't... well... read ;-) Ping! has no interface -- simply drop a PNG file onto it in order to use it. If you just click the app, it will do nothing (since it has not been given a PNG file to work on.) Sorry for any confusion.

If you deal with PNG files, you need this app.

PNG is a great format. It's lossless, patent-free, open, and supported by all sorts of stuff. It's great for screenshots, line drawings, and anything that needs to look good. Unfortunately, many programs which save to PNG format do a horrible job of it. Adobe Photoshop is one of the worst offenders, creating PNG files many times the size they should be. So we created Ping. To use it, simply drop a PNG file on it. Ping will then optimize the file, often reducing its size to a mere fraction of the original.

Unlike similar utilities, Ping is a Universal Binary. Not only that, but we've optimized OptiPNG (the technology that powers Ping) for the latest Intel chips -- taking advantage of all the cool (at least to us geeks) features that're at the heart of Apple's latest and greatest computers.

G4FF3R  Great app to use....especially if you make web based graphics in photoshop.

For features, it would be great if it would also use pngcrush at the the same time as optipng to remove the pesky gamma info (as it is, I have to use a separate program....using one for both would be great) - so as it does only 50% what I want, it has to drop a few marks (hopefully v2 will add this?)

For ease of use...READ the readme file people. It works perfectly well. The only problem is that it has to be visible somewhere (either in an open finder window or in the dock) to be able to drop stuff in......but that's a minor issue (an optional CLI would help here I think).

It's free, what more could you want?

It has never crashed for me. I recently reduced a set of buttons from about 30k to

BOHDANZ  I eagerly downloaded Ping! a few days ago.

Unfortunately the application crashes just as quickly as it tries to launch.

This is both on my iBook G4 running 10.4 as well as my G4 tower (non Intel) running the latest OS X as well.

I've emailed the developer but have heard nothing back, making the app useless.

VECTOR  hey guys...

it's not actually crashing. read this bit from the description above:

"Ping! has no interface -- simply drop a PNG file onto it in order to use it. If you just click the app, it will do nothing (since it has not been given a PNG file to work on.) Sorry for any confusion."

so make sure you're dropping a file or files onto the PING icon. if you're just launching PING from the icon, it won't actually do anything.

VECTOR  works great, and is super fast.

i had an issue where it wouldn't process more than 1 file at a time, so i emailed the developer.

he emailed me back and posted a new 1.01 build on his site in less than 40 minutes. pure class.

so if anyone else is having the problem of Ping only working on 1 file at a time, go to http://www.paramac.com/?id=ping and grab the new 1.01 version.
