Help MacUpdate by , and win an iPod!

DESCRIPTION
FileSync provides selectable synchronization of files or folders to networked Macs, external drives, USB flash drives and mounted disk images. FileSync updates recently modified files any "lone" files between Master and Copy locations. A "mirror" option is provided that only updates with the Master's file structure and moves all "lone" files on the Copy location into the Trash. A progress window shows files updated during synchronization. A handy drawer allows storage for many synchronization lists. FileSync is universal binary.

L0XBY  I created a 128-bit AES encrypted sparse image on my iPod with Disk Utility and tried to sync some files to it, but it didn't work.

SYED ALI  According to the developer

>>>>That said, FileSync DOES synchronize files it finds in the "copy" with those it sees in the "master", it compares modification dates and copies the more recently modified, whether it's on the master or the copy.

Any new files on the "master" not on the "copy" are copied to the "copy"; however new files on the "copy" are not copied to the "master". Again, another "safety" decision, I felt it important to leave the "master" alone unless it is entered as a "copy".

That is EXACTLY what a sync is. You have 2 files and you copy over the oldest file with the newest version regardless of which computer it is on.

All this utility does is copy files from one volume to another. Don't know how it can be called "File Sync".

As far as deleting feature is concerned, wouldn't it be nice to have an option to do an actual sync instead of just not making it available for "safety" reasons.

R CHARLES FLICKINGER  If you save a file and synchronize within one miniute after previously saving and synchronizing, the file will not be considered modified. I had not seen this with regular usage, but I've confirmed it can happen when testing FileSync.

FileSync looks at fle modification dates and converts them to seconds. I believe these are rounded to the nearest minute as the Finder displays them. Hence, if you save and synchronize again within one minute, the modification date looks the same.

NESTIENN  I want to synchronize two folders standing onto 2 differents Mac (iMac G4 / MacBook intel).

After some update of Word document, FileSync running on the iMac did not detected modification and then do not synhronize them.

I'm a little disappointed because this simple tool seems to fill my expectation in terms of files/folders synchronization: simple but unfortunalty not so efficient.

ALBORETO  Very good for what it does! It's small, simple and very fast! No extras or knick-knacks, just pure synchronization!

R CHARLES FLICKINGER  Yes, if you delete a file or folder on the "master", FileSync will not delete the same from the "copy". This was a "safety" decision. I did not want to write a software that deleted files from hard drives without asking permission.

When you are expecting orphaned files on a copy to be deleted, this is called mirroring. Until I program to remove orphaned files, FileSync will not do mirroring. You must manually remove from the "copy" any items that were renamed or deleted from the "master".

MARTINEM  12-Dec-06

I tested FileSync 1.1 to see if it would make a copy of a folder from my iBook G4 to an external USB HDD.

WARNING:: File Sync does not do work correctly, see below for details.

I selected the Master and Copy folders and pressed Sync.

Installation was easy. Setting up the pair of folders to sync was easy.

Test (1): Initial Sync seemed to go okay. It was a file-by-file copy. Saved library file upon exit. Good.

Test (2): Re-sync, with no changes. FileSync went through checking the list of files, and seemed to copy nothing. Good.

Test (3): Renamed 1 file on Copy side.

FileSync renamed the file to match the master. Good.

Test (4): Deleted 1 file on the Master side.

WE HAVE PROBLEM!

FileSync ignored the change. The copy side was NOT KEPT IN SYNC. It should have deleted the file from the copy side, but it did not.

No further testing done today.

The program does not do a proper job syncing two directories. It fails at it's most basic function. This is a show-stopper, so I gave it low marks on everything. Serious!
