DESCRIPTION
Cave Story is a freeware sidescrolling action/adventure/platformer title with leanings towards Wonderboy and recent sidescrolling Castlevania titles. You control a little amnesiac who runs around helping out these rabbit-ish creatures called Mimigas while trying to find your way out of the giant cave inside the floating island which makes up the game's setting.

You can expand your health meter by collecting Life Capsules in similar fashion to Metroid games, while you can get stronger by collecting energy to boost your firearms' output. Each weapon can be built up to the maximum level (3) fairly quickly, but taking damage will drain energy from its experience meter, sometimes causing it to level down. Given how quickly they power up this only tends to be an issue during boss fights, and even then there's usually plenty of opportunities for collecting more weapon energy.

SYHARRIS  Downloaded the English language patch(the game is in Japanese) and followed the directions to convert Cave Story into English, but just can't get the game to work; it opens but doesn't get past the title page.

The "read me" file remains in Japanese.

Clicked on "more information", above, which goes to

Miraigamer.net/cavestory, which seems to be the English lanuage version of the Cavestory website, but it's of no help whatsoever.

So, since the Cavestory download just sits on my desktop like a wet turd, unusable, I trashed it.

Nuff said.

DLWORMWOOD  I'm impressed that such an apparently obscure Japanese Windows freeware is now available on the Mac in English. A fun game with an excellent NES nostalgia factor despite being an original work. Does need a joypad rather than a keyboard to play effectively, the setting of which was a little fiddly, but works.

ANDREWA121  A wonderfully addictive game. It did something funky on me once, causing me to have to reinstall, but it's been golden ever since. Gameplay is nostalgic bliss.

One thing, though. Sometimes I want to listen to other things on my computer while I play, but I see no way to adjust the volume / turn off sound. Alas.

NAMAN  Possibly one of the best 2D platform games ever made. I even like it better than Super Metroid, hard as that may be to believe.

STAR-AFFINITY  The game is awesome!

It is stable if you've got a PPC Mac.

THEVALRUS  Ridiculously awesome game that quits randomly on Intel macs. Generally I can go for 10-15 minutes before something trips it up. :(

If it weren't for that, it would get 5 stars across the board. I'd love to be able to play this game all the way through but given its stability right now, that's not very practical.
