DESCRIPTION
Billable is an application for Mac OS X that helps you keep track of the billable services you perform for a client and then lets you create and manage invoices based on those services.

Features:

  • Keep track of clients with a simple Client Editor.
  • Store per-client defaults.
  • Import Clients from your Address Book.
  • Create Time-based Services with a time span and hourly rate; have Billable calculate the total cost.
  • Create Quantity-based Services to bill for multiple items or a single flat rate.
  • Use the built in timer to start and stop a time-based service.
  • View time progress of an active service via the badged dock icon.
  • Select services you want to get paid for and create invoices with a single click.
  • Customize the HTML template used to generate the PDF invoices and make the invoices appear how you want them to appear.
  • Use the source list to get a quick overview of unpaid invoices, services that have not been invoiced; filter down through the client hierarchy and limit the selection to a given client.
  • Add taxes to your invoices using a flexible system that can accommodate many international needs.
  • Use the statistics bar under the main table to add up totals.
  • Take advantage of the in-application software to stay up-to-date with new releases.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2.4:
  • Added an item in the Application menu that will allow users to copy an AppleScript file from the bundle into their Application Support folder. Billable will now look to run this AppleScript file before using its built-in AppleScript. By editing this script users can do custom subject lines as well and other cosmetic changes as well as script unsupported Email applications.
  • Added an item in the Application menu (in the pattern of the above feature) that will copy the default HTML template file from the bundle into their Application Support folder. Billable will use this template to generate the PDF invoice if present. For more info see the help file.
  • Updated the help file article on customizing templates and added a new one on customizing emails.
  • Refactored KQueue code to watch the invoice template after it is first copied into the Application Support folder.
  • Added small code to kick start background update notification. For some reason the current trunk of SparklePlus isn’t doing so.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later.

MAX YOUR MACS CONSULTING  We have been using Billable for a while now and it is really a very easy to use and manage invoice app that our business is pleased with. The one thing that we sorely need in order to make this a permanent part of our accounting is some simple reporting options. We need to submit monthly summaries to accounting such as a total of sales, total of salex tax collected, etc. It is a royal pain having to manually sift through each invoice and tally all this by hand when it should be a simple implementation to the app.

If this were fixed, it would be much more useful on a wider level to normal businesses who need to handle monthly or periodic reports. As it is, I'm afraid we are going to have to find a replacement but hopefully the developer will grow this app a bit so it will remain useful.

CREATIVE GUY  LOVE this app!

The one feature I would like to see added that hasn't been mentioned (that I've seen anyway) is a button next to "Print" in the invoice section that will "Email PDF" - I mean we've added the customers email address to the database, so why not use it?

Sure you can click the PDF button in the print dialog box, but then you have to manually name the PDF. Most invoice programs support some sort of "email PDF invoice" service, I think it would be a great addition.

ZORN711  Thanks for the feedback kinabrew. I'll see if I can add some of those as the application evolves.

RPPHOTO  All the critical missing features are added with this perfect update. This is a really slick, really easy to use invoicer with the cleanest most attractive ui I've seen.

Excited to see this update I've been waiting for...

KINABREW  This seems like a very good start.

I like the flexible data entry, like the ability to type dates in yyyy/mm/dd or mm/dd/yyyy format in the date fields, the information in the starting points menu, and the way the developer seems to have put a lot of thought into how to make things simple. Controls are located right where you would expect them. The program has a very simple and well-organized interface, and is pretty easy to use for the most part.

There are a few things which would really help:

The lack of right-click ability is annoying. In the left pane, I find myself right-clicking on "Clients" hoping for "Add Client", right-clicking on individual clients hoping for "Edit Client", clicking on individual clients or other items and hoping for "Delete", or clicking on the "Services" category under "Clients" hoping for "New Service".

In the top pane, I find myself right-clicking hoping for "Copy"(to copy an entire item, or if an individual field is selected, just the field), "Delete" and "Duplicate".

In many Mac programs, like in the Finder, when something is selected, you can hit return to highlight its name and rename it. This ability, and the ability to hit tab and shift-tab to get to the previous or next item would be useful both in the left pane, renaming clients or categories, and in the top pane, quickly changing client, date or summary information.

A delete button would be a useful button in the button bar at the top, and the ability to go to Edit:Undo to un-delete an item from the top pane would be much appreciated.

"+ -" menus at the bottom of the left pane like the ones at the bottom of the client editor would make it easier to add clients or folders to sort things.

The invoices look very nice, but I'd also like a little more ability to edit what appears and the location of things on the invoice.

OSXFACTOR  Great app. I've been using it for about 2 months during the beta cycle. The author is responsive to requests and bug reports. There are many other apps that do the same thing, but for what I do (web development), this app strikes the perfect balance between being simple enough to learn/use and being powerful enough to get the job done. My only missing feature is data export/.Mac syncing. Either of those features would satisfy my one request - being able to export my data easily so I can maintain it in two different places. But the author is looking in to this, and it might/might not be in a future release.

REY  I have an independent consulting business and switched my billing to Billable four months ago. I really like it. Very simple in the best possible way. My invoices are easy to generate and track and it works flawlessly with Mail. Best of all, they have a much more professional look to them than previously.

Really there are no negatives, but I'd like to see a pull-down menu for the Services field.

The app isn't inexpensive, but is well worth the money I paid. I enjoy consulting, but hate the business side of doing business and this makes a big part of it much easier, so I'm more than happy with the purchase.

THIRSTYROBOT  Recognizing that this is a 1.0 release, there's still plenty of room for improvement. I do like the simplified, no-fuss style. However, when I attempted to import my clients from Address Book into the app, this is what I got:

"This version of Billable uses a new database format. Migration to this new format is only supported in 1.0b6 and greater. Please quit Billable, erase your existing user files as discusses on the wiki and relaunch. Sorry about the inconvenience."

ZORN711  thirstyrobot: So you're saying you imported some clients from the Address Book, quit Billable, and on re-launch it would not use your database (IE: the dialog you quote)?

If you could email me the vCards for those client I'd really like to try to recreate the bug here.

Sorry for the trouble.
