DESCRIPTION
Apple's Mail works wonderfully to send and receive messages, but using it for long-term storage of email has undesirable consequences. Mail Saver solves this problem by moving messages into the Finder for long-term storage. It does this by linking mailboxes to Finder folders. When Mail Saver saves the contents of a mailbox, it copies its messages into its linked folder, then moves the original messages to Mail's Trash. The linked folders can be located anywhere you wish, such as with a project, an account or an interest group.

Mail Saver simply copies a message without doing any file conversion, thus a saved copy of a message is simply a Mail document (.emlx) file which must be opened with Mail. These saved documents may be Replied, Redirected, Forwarded, Bounced and Printed by Mail just like any other message. (But, they cannot be Junked, Deleted or Flagged). Saved messages also retain attachments, if present. Searching saved messages in Leopard is easy, simply use Spotlight. The saved copy of a message is modified so that:
  • The file name is the header's subject;
  • The modification date is the header's Date Sent; and
  • The comment is the header's To: address (for sent mail) or From: address (for received mail).
This allows you to easily identify messages in a List View Finder window.

Mail Saver uses Apple's Mail as its interface and its action is determined by the mailbox selected in Mail's frontmost Viewer.

This application is fully functional for a period of 30 days following installation, after which continued use requires purchase of an activation key (US$9.95).

ITTY  Great little app. Fills a void in Apple Mail. If you want to archive old email and still be able to find or search the archives without launching Mail, then this little app is for you. Unlike the other available solution; Mail Scripts, Mail Saver will rename the email in an archive folder to make searching quick without even using Spotlight. Since Leopard, we can now view emlx files in the Finder with QuickLook and Search them with Spotlight. Mail Saver adds the needed functionality of renaming the archived emails in human-readable form. And because the individual emails remain in emlx format, they can be opened or imported back into Mail.

Apple Mail's "Archive" function creates an mbox file that is not human-readable in the Finder, forcing the user to re-import the mbox in order to read the emails. This function is intended as an export feature for other apps to import. Not to create a human-readable archive.

The Mail Scripts solution is Applescript based and thus very, very, slow. Although it does create a mail folder with Finder readable emlx files, they are numbered files, with meaningless filenames.

TEKL  If I select Archiving in Mail there's no option. We are speaking about the build-in function in Apple Mail.

ALEX B  You can do this for free in the new version of Mail. Select your mailbox and export it from the menus.

TEKL  Where do you export single emlx-files? I just found the function to export all mails in one big mbox file.

TUISHIMI  You can "archive to file." Does the same thing. It gives you all sorts of options of how to select messages to archive.
