DESCRIPTION
DiskLibrary is a fun and easy to use disk cataloging application for Mac OS X. DiskLibrary is indispensable if you have a lot of media to keep track of. DiskLibrary catalogs not just your complete file structure, it also creates thumbnails, and stores metadata, for most popular media formats.
  • Makes it easy to catalog all of your CD-ROM's, DVD-ROM's, and removable drives.
  • Catalog the full file structure from CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, remote hard-disks, zip drives, USB sticks, etc.
  • Creates beautiful thumbnails of images, movies, PDF document covers, AAC/MP3 album art.
  • Look inside ZIP-files
  • Import Spotlight comments
  • Import CDFinder, WhereIsIt, FileFinder and DiskTracker catalogs
  • Gather meta-data like AAC/MP3 tags, XMP/EXIF/IPTC image info, PDF info, Word/RTF document info.
  • Use smart-catalog folders to store search results just like iTunes.
  • Search in all catalogs for files based on keyword, date, category, size, etc.
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Universal Binary.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.9.5:
  • Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) compatibility

LOUKASH  Nicely done, but if you're a power user of CDFinder and you're looking for a replacement, keep on looking.

On the plus side:

- CDFinder import. Just make sure that you're running CDFinder in English (temporarily disable all languages except English in CDFinder's Get Info window) while you're exporting your catalogs, because DiskLibrary won't import localized CDFinder export files.

- Saved Searches (aka Smart Catalogs), although they're slow, at least on a PowerBook G4/1.67.

- catalogs Owner attributes

On the minus side:

- A single catalog file (Library Data.disklibrary). This may work if you intend to catalog 2 drives and 10 CDs, but I have already over 1000 CDFinder catalogs files occupying over 300 MB disk space. It will be a big pain to maintain all that data in a single file. Especially if you want to synchronize with another Mac or backup your important data regularly: each time you make a single simple change to your database the *whole* big file will change its modification date, i.e. the whole big fat file will be processed on sync/backup! (And yes, I've read about "Compacting the database (Advanced setting)" in the Help file.)

- Yet another Image Cache folder with thousands of files...

- Won't locate files in Finder with uncommon Unicode characters in their path (e.g. Central European). Is the app using AppleScript to get the location? Because that's exactly the point where AppleScript fails!

- Doesn't catalog Finder Labels, Finder Comments, Version, File Type, File Creator, doesn't correctly catalog application bundles.

- How do you *update* a catalog?

- The search should include "ANY field contains". I can't possibly always remember if a search string is contained in the file name or in the metadata or wherever.

SUGARMONKEY  I purchased DiskLibrary a few months ago. I was impressed with it's initial features, but after purchasing and cataloging 30 DVDs I found the launch speed and search speed to be painfully slow.

I've been working with one of their technicians for weeks. Emailing back and forth, but there have been no fixes. I was told that the problem was likely due to the number of image files on my discs (but isn't that the whole idea of a preview?).

Searching often times results in nothing found (even when I KNOW there is a file name within the search criteria).

I would steer clear of this application. In my opinion, it's still in Beta.

DYLAN MCNAMEE  Two "monkeys" in a row saying bad stuff about this app...either weird coincidence, or a developer/fan of another disk cataloger trying to suppress this fine app. I've had none of the problems reported here -- it's fast to index and search, and I've got hundreds of disks cataloged.

UNCOY  Slow and awful. Why didn't I pony up full price for CDfinder instead of buying this second-rate knock off on promo...

Two stars for running at all. If you've never used a decent cataloging application and don't use the image cataloging functions DiskLibrary is better than nothing.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  i found it too much mouse oriented for my taste.

everything needs a mouse click to work. no tabs to switch focus on a particlular field or button. in find mode (command+f) there is no automatic positioning on the search filed (lack of usability) and no way to focus on it via keyboard (what's wrong with fields in this app?).

press enter doesn't work in launching the query (you have to click on the button).

the nested info panel is barebone and poorly formatted and gives you no info about the metadata.

the info panel on command+i is slow to start and close (and keeps on hiding itself).

the preview thumb space is filled with the alwayspresentreflectionthing instead of a better thumb to look at (btw, no way to setup your thumb size).

nice try but it is long way to home. the price is not justified if you look at competitors.

DIEDERIK  This is a note from the developer of DiskLibrary. There have been some performance issues with searching within DiskLibrary (mainly on Mac OS X 10.4). This should have been resolved with version 1.9.

Version 1.9 also adds Quick Look support from within DiskLibrary for Mac OS X 10.5 clients.

Thanks,

Diederik Hoogenboom

FROMAGE-HEAD  The new dispensable apple-like effect blur the images too much.

DIEDERIK  The thumbnails are created exactly the same as in previous releases. It's just how they are presented that has changed.

FROMAGE-HEAD  Right.

I tried a bit more and after further investigations it looks blurry on some pics and ok with others.

DIEDERIK  Searching has been much approved with the advanced search feature in 1.1.1. The photo preview problem should have been resolved also.

WALT9500  Pretty basic at this time, and crashes very often when reading photo previews. Also, the catalog database gets very large quickly, and I hate it when I must create a smart something to perform a simple search...

DREWE2000  Unable to rate at this juncture. I like the idea behind the application - there are other implementations out there, but the iTunes-like interface should fit this purpose very well.

Of course, I don't know that for sure yet, because it crashes when trying to catalog media at this point. For me at least.

Will keep a close eye on this one.
