DESCRIPTION

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1: The SMC Firmware Update adjusts fan behavior in the Mac Pro.

After this update has completed successfully, your SMC Version will be:

1.7f10 (Mac Pro)

1.5f3 (Mac Pro 8-core)

The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically after restart.

Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.

To update the SMC firmware on your Mac Pro:

Your computer’s power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.

1. Quit all other open applications.

2. Click Restart in the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart.

The SMC firmware update starts automatically. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes.

Important: Do not interrupt the update.

Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update.

3. Click OK. The SMC firmware is now up-to-date.

If these instructions appear on your screen again, the SMC firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

Note: This update requires a Macintosh formatted disk or partition. If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) subsystem, you must attach a Macintosh formatted storage device to apply this update. Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from installing correctly. If you are having trouble installing an update try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple branded keyboard, mouse and monitor.

PAOSETEK  I just installed this update. Once the system restarted, I didn't see any noticeable change in system fan speeds or any new options to control fan speeds by temperature or RPM's.

If you are looking to control the four individual fan speeds for the MAC PRO's CPU/HDD/CASE/and Power Supply go to:

    http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/

search for a utility called smcFanControl.app

Once installed, you can easily adjust the fan speeds to keep your system cool.

PAOSETEK  I apologize, I see that you do have 2.1.2, after following your link.

The last line of your comment "(8/8/07 version 1.1)" is misleading.

What does the "version 1.1" refer to?

MACUPDATE ADMIN  1.1 is the version of Apple Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update, we are posting to the reviews to that software, of course.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  And the date and version number are posted in just the same way to your posts as well, not just mine. This is normal and a matter of course, so that people can see when the post was made and to what version of the software they were posting about.

DANA SUTTON  Question: this firmware update installs a piece of software in Applications>Utility. Why? Once the patch has been applied, is it necessary to keep this software, or can it safely be trashed?

MEGAGRAM  Yeah you can just throw out that piece of software once it's successfully updated the firmware. Verify this by going to System Profiler.

But seriously... 1.2MB hanging around on your disk shouldn't be a big concern. ;)

Not the concern (I've got megabytes up the wazoo). I was thinking about what would happen if I managed to lose the appication (for inst. when I upgrade to Leopard) and whether that would screw my Mac. Guess not.

MEGAGRAM  Yeah, once the firmware is upgraded it doesn't matter what you do with your hard disks (software). Firmware is permanent memory on the motherboard that contains code and instructions. So once it's updated it's permanent and independent of your OS/software.

FLYING_MEAT  yeah... um, I'd have to guess that the fans will make the MacBook Pro run cooler, but that would only be a guess since it doesn't actually say "what" fan behavior specifically would be modified.

Cripes! A new level of vagueness. Perhaps next time they won't even mention what the update is for.

Maybe next time it'll just say "Firmware." with no description at all?
