DESCRIPTION
The Unarchiver is a much more capable replacement for "BOMArchiveHelper.app", the built-in archive unpacker program in Mac OS X.

The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than BOMArchiveHelper, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems. Supported file formats include Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, Rar, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many other more or less obscure formats. It is localized into Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Portugese and Russian.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.2:
  • Korean and Traditional Chinese translations.
  • Support for the XZ compression format, along with support for embedded XZ in RPM and XAR files.
  • Support for LZMA2 and some more filters in 7-zip.
  • Support for NSA and SAR.
  • Better support for unicode in Zip files, and some bugfixes for Korean.
  • Better support for MacBinary in Zip.
  • Fixed an issue where the final file in a Zip file created on OS X might get lost.
  • More robust reading of gzip files.
  • Fixed an issue with the interface, where the window was sometimes left open.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

RICHARD TAYTOR  This program has failed on occasion for me. In the present case, I upgraded (from 1.6) and discovered that the latest version (2.1) still has the same problem. BOMArchiveHelper (not to mention tar) has no trouble with the file, which can be found here:

WAHA.06X36  You have a much better chance of getting things fixed if you file a bug report, but now that I have seen this, it will most likely be fixed in the next version.

WAHA.06X36  If you have any passworded files that do not work, please file a bug report and provide the file so I can look into getting them to work.

(Passworded 7-zip files are not supported yet, however.)

JON555  Seriously, why Apple doesn't put this guy on their payroll and integrate this product into OS X itself is beyond me. It's a million times better than Stuffit or any other decompression apps, even OS X's built-in archiver. If you haven't downloaded and installed this already, do it now.

Keep up the awesome work devs!

RPSX  thank you so much! i cannot believe the built in archive utility does not decompress japanese filenames correctly. this does! its now set to decompress every format it supports. apple should just buy this themselves.

JON555  Anyone with a Mac needs to install this now. It's the best decompressor available. It's very discrete (works in the background, you'll never even know it's running), works very will with a huge variety of files, and is constantly updated, all at a great price (free). Keep up the awesome work developers!
