DESCRIPTION
Newsgroup Image Collector (NIC) is the perfect tool for collecting images from Usenet newsgroups. NIC can search one or more newsgroups for images by scanning each posted message. When a message contains image content, the image is downloaded to your computer. You control which newsgroups to search and you can filter out unwanted images by using advanced filter settings.

Usenet is a collection of user-submitted notes or messages on various subjects that are posted to news servers. Each subject collection of posted notes is known as a newsgroup. There are thousands of newsgroups, many of which contain simple text messages, and others contain images posted as attachments.

    **...

KIDDAILEY  This is definitely quite cool and I really wanted to like it more.

Unfortunately, it's got a number of issues (I'll only list the most critical ones I experienced here and send the rest to the author eventually).

It's not a native app. It's Java and is VERY slow. That's to be expected, but what made it unusable for me wasn't the speed, but that it doesn't seem to be able to handle lots of groups with lots of images, resulting in heap memory and other weird errors (like "failed to select group null") every time it tries to start the scanning process.

Less critical, but equally frustrating is a usability issue when editing groups. When clicking on a setting tab for a particular group, the application tries to verify the connection to the server. If there's an error, it won't let you continue.

My ISP's news server has a limit to connections and will often time out. Because of this I constantly found myself retrying the edit panel tab click over and over again until it finally worked.

In fact, this timing out with my ISP caused the program to constantly behave in a less-than-graceful manner, repeatedly reminding me to "check the server name" even though that wasn't the issue.

Lastly, it seemed to hog my news server connections as well and there's no option to specify how many connections it should limit itself to in order to prevent that (such as with MT-NewsWatcher for example).

This application has got a lot of potential and "your mileage may vary," but right now it's a bit too buggy and sluggish for my taste. Here's hoping that the next version arrives soon and is much more improved :)
