DESCRIPTION
DT1 Flocking Orchestra is an interactive installation to play music by visually conducting flocking agents in the 3D virtual space.

It employs flocking algorithms to produce music and visuals. The user's motions are captured by a video camera and influence the flocks behaviour. Each agent moving in a virtual 3D space controls a MIDI instrument whose playing style depends on the agent's state. In this system, the user acts as a conductor influencing the flock's musical activity. In addition to gestural interaction, the acoustic properties of the system can be modified on the fly by using an intuitive GUI. The acoustical and visual output of the system results from the combination of the flock's and user's behaviour. It therefore creates on the behavioural level a mixing of natural and artificial reality. The system has been designed to run an a variety of different computational configuration ranging from small laptops to exhibition scale installations.

BETATESTER  I searched for a different place to ask, but couldn't find any…

This looks very nice, but I have 1 problem:

    I can't hear any sound!

In the Parameter Settings, instruments, the "default synthesizer" is the only option to choose… but there is nothing to hear.

A recorded movie has sound, but the live window not.

    Anyone knows about this?

    I have a mac intel 10.5.6

PALADINO  A brilliantly conceived and beautifully designed work of art, extremely esthetically pleasing and satisfying. Fun to use. This little gem really made my day and put a smile on my face.

Crashed a couple of times on my Macbook Pro w/10.5.4 but still very usable.

Couldn't find contact info on their website. Would be nice if they included it. Would like to send them my crash log and communicate with them.

PAWS  I was seeking something else, but I came across with this amazing application. Glad I did!

You have to try this one yourself - it's definitely an unbelievable experience! This is the most intuitive and fascinating piece of software I have ever used or heard of.

Stability is good, it crashed only once on my MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have been playing with this software for hours now...

    I'm impressed!

    IAMDORIAN  Truly inspired.

This is the sort of programming that blurs the space between art and science - as it should be. Hatz off to the developer. This could be made to gnerate alternating thematic background imagery (clouds, or whatever) also generated/modified through camera movements. This could be (for example) a string section, winds, etc.

    The possibilities are endless.

    BRAVO!

(PS. How about "flying toasters" as a flock shape? :::snicker:::)

MATTHEW CULMORE  Very interesting. Very creative. One of the more cerebral apps I've played with for a while. I really must play with it for a while before I can review it, but you can be sure that's happening right now. Further iterations should be fascinating.
