DESCRIPTION
Letterbox is a plugin for Apple's Mail.app that takes advantage of your widescreen monitor. It rearranges the interface into three vertical columns so the message pane is to the right of the message list, rather than below.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.22beta: This is a Leopard-only release. It adds Leopard compatibility, a spiffy auto-updating mechanism, a simple preference pane, and menu items for quick switching. It does not yet have a two-line column, which will wait for another day.
I'll probably push out a very minor update by today or tomorrow, just to test the auto-updating mechanism. Any and all feedback is appreciated.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

BUMBLEB This plugin is in my experience better than WideMail. Today Mail started freezing. The console revealed some serious errors, and a Google search nailed it down to... WideMail. So back to Letterbox that has worked fine in the past. Seems to still work fine. Featurewise, Letterbox is simpler than the Widemail, but it makes more sense, since it integrates better, because its columns are not custom, which means no wasted space. Sounds confusing, but makes sense in actual use. (Version 0.22b)

MAC COGNOSCENTI I should add that I am aware of the auto-update capability, but what other data is being sent? (Version 0.22b)

MAC COGNOSCENTI Letterbox does what it is supposed to do, however it seems every time I bring up mail, Letterbox sends unknown information without my permission to harnly.net. I caught Letterbox doing this via Lil' Snitch and banned Letterbox from communicating. To the developer, please explain what data you are getting from Letterbox and why you haven't disclosed this to users. (Version 0.22b)

AARONHARNLY The packets you're seeing are from the *optional* check for new versions, which also optionally sends anonymous configuration information (what version of Mail, your processor speed, and screen size). The first time you run Mail with Letterbox installed, it asks whether you want to enable the version check, and whether to send the anonymous information. You can disable it by opening the Letterbox preferences, going to the "Updates" tab, and unchecking the box. Hope that addresses your concerns!

MACMELO And if it doesn't, one can always look for help at the CIA, FBI or (if you're connected) CTU... Maybe Jack Bauer can look into it... Such a conspiracy... :) (Version 0.22b)

I loved Letterbox on my old computer running 10.4. But I cannot get the new version to install on my new 10.5 MacPro. It downloads into this: When I double click it, it turns into this: Letterbox-0.22.dmg.bz2.cpgz When I decompress it I get an empty folder named: Letterbox-0.22.dmg.bz2.cpgz1 I sure would like to put letterbox on my new machine. Can anyone help? (Version 0.22b)

AARONHARNLY Hi Fretwater, Curious. Try just renaming the first file you get to "Letterbox.dmg" and opening that. Perhaps your browser is doing something weird with the file. (Version 0.22b)

WHICH BUTTON IS THE ANY KEY? This is über-damn-cool… as long as you have a proper display to get it in all its glory. While it is easy to cover all the screen real state making it difficult to drag&drop items into email body messages, Exposé comes, as usual, to the rescue. Anyway, liking it… very much, until now I used to use wideMail on Leopard but gladly switched back. Props to the developer, curiosity defeated me to look at this guy other jobs and it seems Letterbox is Aaron's maiden app and pretty much nailed it. Impressive dude, impressive. (Version 0.22b)

FLASH1296 Of no consequence for those with large displays; this is an OUTSTANDING enhancement for those of us who are MacBook jockeys with cramped screen real estate. (Version 0.22b)

LEMERLOT Wow!!! Letterbox is the Mail enhancement I've waited for. Works like a charm - and I love its options. Now I even think of switching from Entourage to Mail as my main email application... Thanks so much for this great app!!! (Version 0.22b)
