EDITOR NOTES
Letterbox 0.24 is currently in beta with preliminary support for Mac OS X 10.6. Feedback can be left here.
DESCRIPTION
Letterbox is a plugin for Apple's Mail.app that takes advantage of your widescreen monitor. It rearranges the interface into three vertical columns so the message pane is to the right of the message list, rather than below.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.24b5:
  • Updates Letterbox for the impending arrival of 10.6.2.
  • Adds an extremely simplistic two-line view.
  • I’d like to make it more customizable, and support including dates within the column, but not at the expense of simplicity, stability, and speed. So we’ll see how it goes. Still a manual install to keep out the unadventurous.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.6 or later.

LONEPALM  Does what it says ti does. However, I'm seeing a quirk when running b5 on Mac OS X 10.6.2. What happens is that periodically, for some unknown reason, it stops working and drops back to the Apple default view where preview is below the message list. I go into Mail preferences, de-select Letterbox, re-select it and quit mail. Upon coming back up, Letterbox is again functional. This happens to me on 3 different Mac all running 10.6.2. Anyone have an idea of why Letterbox drops out periodically ?

SUPERKONNA  If this type of plug-in didn't exist I would use some other mail app. I like Apple's Mail but the lack of vertical view is plain weird. Kudos to the developer.

HAL0THANE  This is the single most important Mail.app bundle you can install to increase your productivity in the app you spend so much time using. Fast, easy, and unobtrusive, Letterbox is a beauty for keeping your attention where it should be: on the message.

An idea I'd like to see, though, is switching the 2nd and 3rd column so that the middle column (center) is the message -- it's where the focus is visually, and so it should be where you focus on the most important stuff.

DOKTER_MAC  I'm very happy to say that this great 'mailplugin' also works fine on PPC Macs!!!

I've just installed version 0.22, since I'm running Mac OS 10.5 on a PowerMac G5.

-Installation on PPC Mac running 10.5 without any problems!

-First launch of the Mail app and everything works just fine!

-Preferences are all working!

-Auto Update works also!

-In short, everything works just fine like it should be! On both architectures :-) ...

To the developer: Could you please correct the requirements from Intel to PPC/Intel.

You've made a lot of PPC users very happy with this mailplugin!!!

I'll write a complete 'review' when I used the plugin a couple of months. But for now 5 stars!!!

With kind regards.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  Yes! It's working perfectly! Why couldn't Apple have this setting as default in the first place?

Thank you, Aaron Harnly!

KANKEI71  I love LetterBox, have been using it since long ago. I installed this beta version (just replaced older version with this new one), Mail was back to the classic horizontal view and LetterBox was no longer on the preferences. I had to reinstall the previous version for having the 3 column view back. Not sure if I did something wrong... seems there is a problem. May someone confirm?

DR. GIRLFRIEND  No prob here. Did you have Mail open or closed when you installed it? I had Mail closed and didn't have any previous versions of Letterbox installed.

KANKEI71  Thank you. I got it... I'm still on 10.5. I thought this new version would be OK for Leopard AND Snow Leopard, which is not the case. All fine now.

PSYCHOS  Feature suggestion: It would be awesome to have multiple message lists available. That is, multiple copies of the mailbox list (if open) + message list on the left (with a separate columns header for each message list if possible, preferably toggleable), with a single preview pane on the right. You should be able to drag the message list separators to resize them. Things like individual sorting/threading options for each would be nice.

I'd love to be able to have, say, 3 message lists open: One sized to about 60% vertical height for work email, one sized to 25% vertical height for personal email, and one sized to 15% vertical height for non-important work email (automated notifications and such.)

I currently manage this by using rules to set background colors for different categories of work/personal mail (viewed as a unified inbox of two IMAP accounts), and I don't even bother displaying the non-important work mail since the volume is too great to mix it in with my inboxes, but if I could have a non-intrusive view of it taking just a bit of space, that'd be nice. This, of course, results in an interleaved view; what I want is a non-interleaved view of multiple message lists, each sorted separately.

Oh, and another feature suggestion, as if I wasn't already asking too much: A From/To column. Or, just the ability in the "From" column to have it display like "To: " if it's a sent message (or however else this can be matched if possible.) I like to display my sent mail with my inboxes as well, which I also color code. But it'd be nice to be able to see the recipient of sent mail in the same "From" column, rather than just see that it's from me.

I could accomplish this through a couple of different hacks, such as having a script on my IMAP server copy sent mail into an archival mailbox for the original, then rewriting the From to "To: xxx" in the main sent mailbox. Or perhaps creating a Smart Mailbox and using an Applescript to do the same. But it'd be nice to just have a simple way to do it.

STROUTE  I wasn't able to install manually but I succeeded this way: Installed version 2.2 that brought up the Mail Plug in auto installer application. After installing .22 and running mail, it automatically disabled the plugin. I then ran the Mail plugin auto installer, had it open the .24beta file and had it install it for me. I then ran Mail, and letterbox works perfectly now.
