EDITOR NOTES
Posted at the developer's site, today, October 3, 2008: "After much soul-searching (it's not you, it's me), for personal reasons, Techspansion is closing its virtual doors.
The Support Forum and Support E-mail will be available for a while longer to take care of any remaining issues for you.
Thanks for all your support. It's been a fun ride."
DESCRIPTION
VisualHub bridges the gap between numerous complicated video formatting standards, and people that just want to get the job done - just what you would expect from the Mac.
If you're looking for something a little more flexible, VisualHub's up for that challenge too. An extensive Advanced panel lets you change all pre-set aspects of encoding...and then some.
Based on the popular, award-winning "iSquint" conversion software for iPods. If you've used iSquint, you already know how to use VisualHub. If you've never used iSquint, you won't have a lot of catching up to do anyway.
Features:
- Fast conversion from nearly every video format to iPod, PSP, TiVo, DV, DVD, AVI, MP4, WMV, MPEG and Flash.
- Convert any file in three steps. Click, drag, click.
- Fit up to 18 hours of video on one DVD. Play it in any standalone DVD player.
- Xgrid support. Use the power of every Mac on your network for batch encoding.
- QuickTime Pro or special plugins not required.
- DivX/XviD AVIs, all forms of MPEG video, and many other formats QuickTime struggles with are supported.
- Batch Processing of multiple files. Save in-place, or to a different folder.
- Very comprehensive Advanced panel to modify every aspect of encoding.
- Dynamic Preview - See results before beginning a long encode.
- Stitch multiple files together to combine videos.
- Highly detailed, informative Users Guide.
- Universal Binary for PowerPC and Intel Macs.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.34a:
- Added a workaround for a bug in iPhone/iPod touch 2.0.x software that prevents certain files from being played after syncing.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. 10.4.3 or later recommended. 10.4.3-10.4.11 required for Xgrid encoding.

FLTNSPLR1 Especially for the money, VisualHub destroyed the competition! Sure, you can look through the Internet listings for transcoders and find something else that will convert Windows Media to QuickTime, no problem – but that's only if you have at least a hundred dollars to spend, and usually such an app will cost even more. Once in a while it would glitch, but more often it would straighten out files about which QuickTime would complain: "This is not a movie file." Well, sorry, Mr. QuickTime Program Analysis Facilitator, but nine times out of ten, VisualHub would come through beautifully with nary a hitch (except that it would take a little longer to convert those videos than it would the uncorrupted ones). In conclusion, it's the best $25 I ever spent on an application. (Version 1.34a)

DLWHITE So iVideoConverter is discontinued. But now what? I've tested a bunch of programs, and I can find NOTHING that approaches VisualHub's simplicity, elegance and scope. PLEASE let me know if I've missed something. Has anyone cobbled together a simple workflow (even if it uses several apps) that approximates VisualHub's capabilities? And I miss the user-friendly interface. (iVideoConverter worked well, but the UI was a little oblique.) Please let 2010 be the year that a new transcoding app appears from the mists and saves us all.

PHILIPPE-MAC I really do not understand why people keep referring to VisualHUB. First, it isn't available anymore. I had to dig into illegal sites to download a version. But registering isn't possible anymore. So why recommending this is a mystery to me. But digging into this I discovered a really out of date user interface. It is not user-friendly at all. I am pretty new to OSX but this is not OSXish at all and not appealing to use. It also doesn't work with a lot of video files I have. My .mkv could not be converted, .ts files gave script errors and other issues. The files that do convert seem to be good be nothing outstanding really. Maybe VisualHub was good in past times when there weren't any other converters available. Nowadays there are many other doing a better job. I recently tested several converting tools and Handbrake and iVideo-Converter are imo much better options ! (Version 1.34a)

DLWHITE Does VisualHub still work under OS 10.6? I use it daily and can't imagine life without it. (Version 1.34a)

SIPHYN87 So far visualhub continues to work well with me on 10.6, I mainly convert videos to mp4 though, so I'm not sure how the other presets work with SL. (Version 1.34a)

TICE I have problems since 10.6 with the registration. VisualHub accepts the serial number but still stops converting at 2 min. The next start it asks for the serial number again. If anybody has a solution for that it would be great! (Version 1.34a)

JHBRETIN I'm expecting alot from redux-encoder, but so far it does not convert SWF. VisualHub no longer works for me on Leopard, it converts my AVI videos twice! (x2 times), which is not really whar I Want. Well, handbrake is great but does not deal with SWF. And I don't see why this sort of software is not natively available from Apple.

MAQUERO Because VisualHub no longer converts youtube (flv) videos to QTP I use Keepvid. It lowers the videos of youtube directly in format mp4 and then with VisualHub it is possible to turn in the format that you prefer. (Version 1.34a)

MTPALMS VisualHub no longer converts youtube (flv) videos to Quicktime files for me. I get an error that "stops all conversions", although the unconverted file plays in flvThing (a flash video player). Is this the beginning of the end of VH's functionality, and is it time to check out FilmRedux? (Version 1.34a)

LEE123 umm, did you read the description? This project is dead. (Version 1.34a)

MTPALMS Yes I did read the description, but up until I made my previous post, VH was still working fine. It's now open source, free, and called FilmRedux, but requires Leopard. I also found a bookmarklet that coverts flv to mp4 on the fly which will work until I can upgrade to Leopard on both my Macs. (Version 1.34a)

THEROCKSTER26 For what's its worth, I prefer VisualHub for when I'm converting avi files to iPod videos to watch on a TV when I'm away in hotels on business. Don't get me wrong Handbrake is a great program, however the audio output is far too low for my liking. Watching on the iPod was Ok but on testing a conversion at home, I found myself having to turn up my amp practically to full. This improved the level but not exactly to home cinema standards with the sound not been entirely dynamic. After trawling through the web and Handbrake's forum for a solution to the low audio output issue(and before you say it- no turning up the DRC doesn't work) I saw saw a couple of mentions for VH and its function that allows you increase the audio. This function works a treat, allowing you to increase the volume up to three fold with no loss in quality i.e. distortion. The picture quality difference between VH and Handbrake is negligible (Handbrake shades it by a whisker) so until Handbrake rectifies it's audio issue I will be using VH for foreseeable future for all my iPod video needs. For the rest of my encoding needs I'll probably stick with Handbrake because, as I mentioned earlier, it possibly the best video encoder for the Mac (audio issue aside). (Version 1.34a)
