DESCRIPTION
Lifeboat is a reliable, easy-to-use backup utility. Pick where, what, and when and Lifeboat will handle all the dirty work of backing up your files. With incremental backups and compression, your backups will take up as little time and space as possible.
Backups can be saved locally on your computer, a CD or DVD, an external hard drive, or sent over a network to a .Mac account, a shared folder on another Mac, or a shared folder on a windows computer. Wherever you choose to backup, Lifeboat will copy your files, compress them, and write out a digest of what it did for restoring later.
Lifeboat is designed to make restoration as possible as it can. Restore directly from a backup task, from any backup digest, or if all else fails, restore from the backup manually. Lifeboat creates a human-readable digest at each backup location that you can use to locate each file and place it in its original location.
Files can be chosen in two ways: pick them directly or use a smart group to grab a set of files. Smart groups can be created just like a smart folder in finder and will automatically update as you add files to that set of files.

SHENZHOU This shareware seems to have been abandoned. A visit to the author's website only shows a window to retrieve your lost serial and not any support or developments in progress. Looks like I have to write off what I paid since no update for Leopard is forthcoming.

DRBONES666 VAPORWARE!!!!!!!!!!! Don't buy this. He's been promissing the ability to save to disks for over a year now. This is just a trap to get your $30. There is plenty for free that does that same job.

DRBONES666 I registered this software because the author was promising removable media. This was well over a year ago. There is no support and for what I can tell, this program is dead and abandoned.

RADDLE Great feature set, and looks wonderful. But a few failed backups - without much in the way of explanation - and the way it slows the machine to a crawl (especially while writing the interminable log) means I'm relectantly going back to TriBackup for the time being. TriBackup looks like a dog and lacks a lot of Lifeboat's features, but (a) has never failed me, (b) runs happily in the background, (c) has an easy way to get deleted files removed from backups and (d) has never crashed while I wasn't even using it - or during a backup, which has happened twice with Lifeboat. I have high hopes for Lifeboat though - and this is a comment rather than a review because it's *possible* that some of the above is my problem rather than the software's - is there going to be an update soon?

RADDLE Updating this in 2008: app never worked properly, was never adequately supported, and has now been abandoned.

TFINDLAY Worked fine for small backups but when I tried to backup my Library folder a bunch of stuff was not copied to the backup location.

RYAN BRITTON There is a crash bug with a particular component Lifeboat uses that was introduced with the 10.4.7 update. I've created a fix for this and will update the listing tomorrow morning.

RYAN BRITTON Not yet. I am working on getting that kind of functionality in, but for now Lifeboat can only do data backups.

GCOGHILL I was hesitant to try this app after the negative reviews for the earlier versions. I am glad I took the chance with Lifeboat. I was a semi-happily registered user of Deja Vu (it did it's job fine), but there were feature DV was lacking that prompted me to look elsewhere. Lifeboat not only had everything I was looking for in a backup app, but also has a very responsive developer, willing to take suggestions and fix any glitches. I had a few probs when demoing the app, but I think they were on my end (hard drive going bad and mucking up my system). The dev was super helpful throughout the troubleshooting, and when 1.2 came along I found almost all my requested features implemented. I registered before the demo expired and have been a happy user ever since.

WHAT THE? Brilliant interface, ease of use, look forward to Applescript functionality maybe in 1.3. Pretty much over programmes that have far too many unnecessary functions, buttons and windows. And some backups you are just limited DV.... I feel this will get there as it is already.
