DESCRIPTION
UnPlugged is an application to notify when the power cord of the Mac is unplugged or plugged in. Notifications are done using Growl, or with a Alertwindow, when Growl is not installed.
This App is done with Cocoa and doesn't use as much RAM and CPU usage as the other tools available.
Usage Hint: - to quit UnPlugged option click on the notification or hit the quit button in the alert panel when Growl is not installed

unplugged will show the battery status every couple of percents that the battery looses capacity, you can change this in the prefpane.

you can also specify applications where you don't want to see this kind of notifications (e.g. keynote, when doing a presentation)
Installation
- download the .dmg and doubleclick the contained UnPlugged.prefPane. this will ask you to install the new version.
- click Start

WHIT_G Same result here - I just upgraded to Leopard (10.5.3) and UnPlugged does nothing. I've tried opening the pref pane and clicking "start." No dice. "Start on Login" is also selected, no change after reboot.

KARSTEN@BRIKSOFTWARE.COM well it is included in the preference panel.. i don't know if installing unplugged again will help, you may try to download it again and then doubleclick on the preference pane in the disc image. Upon opening the prefs it should ask again if it should install the helper application, which is what you need. If it doesn't ask, please right-click on the preference pane in the disc image and select show contents. Then navigate into the contents and the resources folder, there is a UnPlugged.app. This application needs to be copied into your application folder and it needs to be running in order for Unplugged to work correctly. Sorry for the inconveniences but i don't have time to rewrite UnPlugged to have a simpler installation. | |

DOUG S. I'd double-check your Growl settings. Also, if you have any Logitech software installed that tends to mess with Growl notices, which includes UnPlugged. I have 10.5.3 and it works perfectly fine for me.

PIANOMANSAM I've downloaded this program and liked how it doesn't use as resources or processing time as my own program. However, I really miss the audible alert that mine gives. If you could include some sort of beep or user selectable sound, I would switch over to your app. I only wrote PowerCheck because at the time there weren't any other programs that offered this funtionality. My programming skills are limited, but you seem to have a good grasp of it. I think it'd be also helpful to release this to open source, that way it could be included in HardwareGrowl, something I already use. Thanks!

NEUTRALZONE Useful! The PowerBook G4 adapter can fall out of wall outlets a little too easily because of the weight of the power brick combined with the flimsy plug on a hinge and the lack of a third prong. Just today the adapter fell out of the wall outlet in a cafe a couple times (the outlet is loose because of the heavy usage by patrons) and I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for Unplugged. I have a clear view of the battery icon in the menu bar, but if I don't look up there, I might not notice the power state change. My only wish is that it was more integrated into HardwareGrowler so that Unplugged doesn't have to run as a separate application.

BABY BLOC Seems the best of the lot. My 15" powerbook (AL) has developed the annoyance of "unrecognizing" the power-source at random moments, leaving my battery to drain. I've spent hours troubleshooting, but until I find the answer, this little app lets me know when it happens. I wish I could set (with Growl or whatever) to notify only when power goes out. I usually know when I plugged in. Can that be two separate notices?

KARSTEN@BRIKSOFTWARE.COM feature request was added in 1.4.1. about the bug i have to say i got the exact same. i guess it's something related to the powersupply, because i only have that problem when i visit my parents, but i usually don't have this problem at home. maybe it's because of power-fluctuations.

BABY BLOC I've tried a lot—reseting Power Management, zapping pram, lots of basic maintenance. No change in my Powerbook still occasionally "unrecognizing" that it's plugged in. Like I said, this little utility very much takes care of my problem. I just see the notice and unplug and plug back in. No loss (not a cure, but a great relief.) Only thing I've suspected is that the power thing may be related to fast-user switching where there's more than one logged in user. No idea really. Thanks for your comments.

EAN Independence from Growl and low CPU usage make this the best of the breed. The notification window don't always come to the front though. Repeatedly flashing the screen in addition to an alert dialog would be cool. For the nattering nabobs, sometimes laptops are installed in racks or other settings in which the power connector is not readily visible.
