WOLFO  I tried different Miro versions from time to time since when it was still called Democracy Player. I always loved the idea, but the application itself was always bloated, slow and produced a lot of errors and crashes.

I just downloaded version 2.5, which is advertised, as being much faster. The Miro Guide* had some smaller rendering bugs, but nevermind. I downloaded 5 videos from different feeds, everytime an error message popped up. I then deleted the old preference file and started Miro again. Still the same errors as before, except now it won't even show me the Miro Guide.

I'm running this on Mac OS X 10.5.7 on a PowerPC G4.

Seriously, this is a huge disappointment. Fix this!

*mistranslated as 'Benutzerhandbuch' in the German localization.

VINCE.  So many postive things have been said about Miro so far on which i mostly agree. so i just want to add one thing that i dislike about it:

It runs very slow on my machine and needs alot of CPU Time. My fans always crank up when i open Miro. the developer should check out if there are possibilities to make the software more lightweight. esspecially the main window (where the different channel feeds are shown, download etc) runs very slow, and reacts to clicks with some delay.

Tested on:

Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6, PowerMac G4 2x1.25Ghz, 2GB RAM, ATI 9000 Pro 64 MB VRAM

DHESS01  Miro 2.0 wiped my channel folders and almost all feeds. Before upgrading, export feed list! Install and open Miro 2.0, wait while it updates the database, delete or save as a seperate export anything left in the sidebar. Import your old old feeds and channel folders. Good as old but faster and more stable!

MARIUS_TH  Subtitles are already supported, just drop a .srt file with the same name as the video file in the same folder and play it with Miro

TERRJACK  First the pluses I like about Miro:

1. It still runs nicely under Tiger

2. It still runs nicely under older PPC hardware

3. It has a decent RSS and Torrent side to it.

But, for all of that, Miro is plagued by even the most simplest of things that

most users pull their hair out and say, "WTF?" "it CAN'T DO THAT?!?"

Here is a list of top ten things that Miro needs to make it a 5 star app:

10. Drag and Drop files directly into a Playlist.

I'm sorry, but iTunes has spoiled us, and the fact that you have to insanely drag and drop

onto the Miro icon ( no where else) and the videos then have to be "add to Library" link

checked to add, is ridiculous!! HEllo! I want to add videos that's why I d&D'd them in the fist place!

9. Organize Playlist by AlphaNumeric.

Drag six videos all correctly named and numbered into a playlist from the library,

and watch Miro freak out and put them in random order. again, c'mon....!

8. Be able to select the Playlist and just initiate playback.

Again iTunes lets you select a list, hit play, you get the list playing

in order. Paying attention yet....?

7. Be able to have the videos play one after another without remembering to set a

preference flag.

6. Ability to Syncronize Playlist Folders to content.

Add some content to a watched folder in Miro, make Miro add that content to the

matching Playlist.

5. Play all files from the start of the file, or at least give us the option.

Miro plays where you left off in a file you last played, or if the file is a stitch

together QT refrence movie, made up of say three smaller files pasted one after the other,

it picks the last stitch in the QT file and plays from there.

Hello! treat it as a new file, and play from the beginning.

4. Turn off BitTorrent and make it so we have to turn it on at first launch of the app.

It is on by default, and nothing like putting Miro on an older PPC box and watching it

choke because it's too busy trying to torrent, when you just want to set up playlists

of your own content.

3. Give us Google search instead of YouTube Search.

Miro's youtube search sucks @$$...it can't find the same file within 10 mins

of searching. Trash it, and just enable Google search within Miro.

Just like Safari, a little Google search bar that we can use to find our content

on Youtube faster and easier.

2. When You create a new Playlist, have the Playlist organize in Alpha-Numeric Order!

nothing like having a playlist called "Zebra Fun" and then create a new playlist called

"Bat-Thing Playhouse" and the "B" playlist just jumps in behind the "Z" playlist.

again, iTunes spoiled us on this.....You create a new Playlist, iTunes alpha-numeric

organizes the Playlists. Even an option click to just "Sort Playlist by Name" would

be sufficient!!!

and the #1 thing:

Make Miro play Video_TS folders on the Hard Drive!

Even if you have to incorporate VLC!!!!!!!

CHRIS FAM  Big bug that will cause your incomplete Torrent downloaded data to re-download over again the next time you open Miro 1.1. Not always but about 40% of time it happens

ORION MK. V  Definitely my favorite all-in-one movie, vpodcast and streamed video tool now. Runs great, save for the startup guide page, and so far runs flawlessly in 10.4.10 on my Intel iMac.

8OO8  No problems using it, here, on my 17" Powerbook 1 GHz with 1.5GB RAM. OS 10.4.9.

Upon launch of Democracy Player, CPU was at 100% for the first minute 'till everything loaded, but my Powerbook maintained total composure, with nary a hiccup, belch or fart.

Downloads played just fine. Searching YouTube and Google video via Democracy Player for certain videos that I know are there yielded zilch for some reason.

However this app seems to work just fine, overall. I think I'll keep it. It DOES look most interesting.
