DESCRIPTION

Notae... Everyone has a lot of notes. Some of them are organized, most of them aren't. It doesn't have to be that way.

Notae keeps all of your thoughts together. It lets you tag each item with words that are important to you, not just with predefined labels. Then, when you need that data the most, Notae lets you quickly search your data by content or tag to find what you're looking for.

WHAT'S NEW

LEWISH  Completely loved Notae until I upgraded to Leopard... unfortunately it runs incredibly slow now. Hoping for a fix, but dev site doesn't have any news.

AHKNIGHT  Notae runs slow because of a bug in Leopard's Spotlight service, unfortunately. I have located the cause and filed a bug with Apple.

What happens is that every time you change a note, Notae loads some data from disk (the NIB for the new note type). When that happens, Spotlight hits the disk hard for a little while and then comes back. So, unfortunately, it's nothing I can really control on my end.

It's bugging me too, surely. And for some people 10.5.1 helped a little, so be sure to update to that.

GUNTIS  Notae doesn't remember width of the columns. (For example, Name column width). Could you add column width values in the application preferences (plist) file?

If I add Tags which don't fit in the column, tags are displayed over the next (Created) column. If I resize Tags column to the right, Created column still has the end of the tag labels visible. Clicking on any entry removes that artefact. Or, if I make Tags column too narrow to display all tag label, and then make it wider by moving Created column to the right, again the right end of the tag labels remain visible on the Created column. Can this be corrected?

AHKNIGHT  Column widths will be added soon, yes.

The tags showing oddly is something Apple did. I'm looking into a solution for that.

GUNTIS  1. If I type in the Search field some word, Notae lists entries where this word is present. I select some entry and see that word highlighted. Now I delete that word in the Search field and type the next word I see in the currently visible note. Next word is highlighted, BUT - previous word also is still highlighted! There should be some refresh.

2. If I copy some portion of text into the Clipboard (and that text starts with the opening quotation mark), and paste it in the Search field, all text string which is found gets highlighted with the grey colour, but as soon as I click on it, every word gets different colour highlight. (After that clicking somewhere else doesn't change highlight colour). Is this behaviour correct?

3. Could you add option to search for the exact phrase? So that all other instances of individual words wouldn't get highlighted or displayed in the result list. For example, if I set some phrase in quotation marks or square brackets, or something like that.

4. How about adding folder list in the left pane, similar to Apple Mail 2 Mailbox pane? It would be much easier to sort and classify notes. And I could create and use Smart Folders too! For example, Smart folder for all notes with the "Audio" tag and creation date . Wow! Notae would become ÜberNotes! :) This feature is very important for me because I'm looking for the application where I could store all our publishing house book texts (about 10.000+ pages) for easy lighting-fast search. Without folder list it's hard to manage tens and sometimes even hundreds of chapters of text... And a little bit more robust search capabilities (like exact phrase) would make Notae perfect candidate for this purpose!

(I hope it can handle 10.000 pages of text without loosing speed?)

AHKNIGHT  I've taken note of these things, but please use the suport forums on codepoetry.net rather than posting issues here. I don't look for bugs on third-party sites.

CRUCIAL  Notae is a minor stroke of brilliance. It is not a notebook app that tries to be all things to all people, nor is it an outliner or glorified to do list. The easiest way to think of it is TextEdit on steroids (doctor prescribed) without any of the harmful side effects that steroids often have. It's not bloated, doesn't have mood disorders (its totally stable) or have an interface that gets in the way of doing things. Because it is based on CoreData, searches are instantaneous across all of your notes. Tags let you add as many category markers to a note as you want, and then sort on these with the tag palette. Being able to lock a note stops you from accidentally deleting or changing things. One of my favorite features is auto naming of notes (your first line becomes the note name).

For a 1.0 product it is remarkably mature and nearly all of its features work exactly as you would expect them to. The exception to this is using the search bar to search for a tag, but since you can do the same thing with the tag palette that is not a big deal. The developer is responsive, and gets bug fixes out fairly rapidly, he is also aware of features that need to be implemented like viewing only the columns you want like the Finder, Mail and iTunes allow. At $15 Notae is worth every penny.

ADRIAN L. D. SAMPSON  Since Notational Velocity, which has its own slew of frustrating limitations, this is the only note-taking software I've been able to use comfortably for more than five minutes. Full-featured, stable, and, above all, transparent. Notae finally gets it right at a downright reasonable price.
