EDITOR NOTES
The Download Now link is for the Intel-based version. The link for the PPC version is in Related Links below.
DESCRIPTION
Pic-a-POD downloads a picture of the day from up to four different collections and sets your desktop picture. It can then randomly change the picture at set intervals. Downloading new pictures can be scheduled to happen every day, or only when you want. You can browse through the downloads, deleting or setting the desktop as you wish. The user interface can be shrunk to a mini window if you want to save space and it can have different color themes applied.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2.7:
  • Removed extra text from Earth Science captions. Restricting Wikipedia picture sizes so that enormous files are not downloaded. Sunday 11th October, 2009.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, 10.3 or later recommended.

MACUPDATEADMIN  I wish there was a way to make this work on a MacBook with its native screen resolution of 1280x800, but I guess you need the right size image?

BOBSTER  I really didn't mind the interface, despite the fact that it was not "Mac-like".

And who can argue with free? Not to mention the awesome images you can get at your fingertips in no time (with broadband that is hehe)

BUGEYEDMONSTER  Impressions from a desktop background JUNKIE (listed in order during my first use):

User interface:

In an era of beauty vs useful geeky simplicity, this interface, unfortunately, falls closer to the latter. A tip: Get a friend or pay someone to put some thought into the interface if you're unable. I should mention that some of the shortcomings seemed to be overcome by using the "platinum" theme, which at least made it look a little more "Mac". **__

Functionality:

Brilliant. My 3 absolute favorite sources (WikiPedia, Astronomy POD and Nat. Geo) in one convenient place. It all seems to work well (I'll definitely post again if it doesn't update tomorrow morning properly, though). ***1/2

Usefulness:

Fantastic. Much easier than browsing myself, although it does seem like it will detract from the "fun" of browsing and seeing what else might be on the related sites. ***1/2

Overall, I really like it, but wish it had a more "professional" interface. If this is a sole developer - I haven't looked at the "more info" page - you're a total legend, keep up the good work. Definitely marking this one as one to keep an eye on. ***1/2
