DESCRIPTION
PlayVideoTS opens the VIDEO_TS folder of ripped DVDs into the Mac OS X DVD Player application.
PlayVideoTS works in either of two ways:
- drop a folder containing a VIDEO_TS folder
onto PlayVideoTS and it will be opened and start playing in the Apple DVD Player
- append a .dvdvideo to the directory name, thus transforming the folder into a bundle recognized by PlayVideoTS. From then on you can just double click on it in the Finder to start up the ripped DVD in the Apple DVD Player. Click here: screenshots, to see the change.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.0.1: Fixed a bug that disabled dragging of an unrenamed dvd rip folder onto PlayVideoTS. This feature should be functioning again.

MDAMLI Suggestions for later versions: Either make it hidden (except from the Activity Monitor) or have it show in the menubar, but remove it from the dock, and make it universal. That way, I could have it run in the background when the computer starts up, and DVD Player will always be able to open VIDEO_TS-folders

TICHICUS There are no doubt several other ways of playing DVD files but what PlayVideoTS makes it all so easy. Rip the DVD using an application such as MacTheRipper. Then rename (or keep the existing name) but add to its name .dvdvideo. Next time, you double click on this new icon, Apple DVD launches and plays your converted DVD. In simplicity lies genius. (The icon is the only flaky bit of the whole thing) If you are so inclined, do have a twiddle with this and a tweak with that but I'd much rather use PlayVideoTS, relax and enjoy the movie.

FAIB To clarify, what this tiny app does that the Mac OS doesn't is let you double click to open a dvd rip from the Finder, an admittedly small feature not currently available in the Apple DVD player. As is evident from the comments, its a small feature, and definitely not something everyone needs. :) However, it does make firing up ripped DVDs just a touch simpler, which is all it aims to do.

JOELSCHMIDT2 to Michael Pipolo Actually, you can drag and drop the Video_TS folder onto the DVD Player icon in the applications folder (or in your dock like I have it) and it will start up automatically. Still no need for this program.

JTHREE What is this good for? You could make a folder of your ripped DVD's, turn them into bundles, stick the folder in your dock or desktop and you've got a one step movie launcher.

FAIB Appending the extension ".dvdvideo" will automagically turn the folder into a bundle that PlayVideoTS recognizes for as long as PlayVideoTS is installed on the system. This is a general feature of the Finder in Mac OS X that allows software developers to specify that certain directories be treated as single files. It is the same mechanism that drives the ".app" = Application feature. All ".app" Applications are actually folders, in Apple speak "bundles" or "packages", that contain the executables and resources for the Application. If you would like to explore this feature, try control clicking on an application. You should be given the option to "Show Package Contents". You will now be able to explore the files inside the Application in the Finder. Beware though, because messing up these files can cause the Application to malfunction.

WHYTOI Doesn't seem to work for me. Dragged the folder containing Video_TS over the app and nothing happened. OS X 10.4.3.

Thanks for noticing that the folder dragging function wasn't working. The feature was accidently disabled during the final revisions. A new release, PlayVideoTS 1.0.1, is available on our website that fixes the bug. Thanks for the feedback!

MICHAEL PIPOLO In response to all the "what is this for" questions... Basically, all I can see that this does is eliminate two steps in the normal DVD player process, opening DVD Player itself, and then giving the "Open..." command and finding the file. With this application, all one has to do is either double click on their renamed VIDEO_TS folders to start playing them (QuickTime movie style), or drag a VIDEO_TS folder to the dock icon. Personally, I won't sacrifice an icon space in my dock for this program, and for as little as I play ripped DVDs, I will skip on it entirely. Not worth the download, and especially not worth one extra item in my Applications folder (still fairly neatly organized after having my iBook for 4 months :) ).
