DESCRIPTION
Deep Sleep... The default behavior of Mac OS X is to put sleeping computers in 'hardware suspend' mode, during which the RAM is still powered on. This widget allows the computer to enter 'software suspend' mode. Software suspend is a feature similar to what windows call 'hibernation': the computer consumes no power while sleeping, however the wake up process takes more time to complete.

Hibernation is made possible by the Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.3 update. This operating system version is required.

Only the computers with 'safe sleep' feature are officially supported. For now, the only computers with this feature are the Powerbook 'HD' line of Apple laptops. Please read the included documentation for more information, including the possibilty to use this widget on unsupported computers.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1:
  • Worked around an issue which caused a significant time delay before sleep under Mac OS X 10.5.
  • Fixed a rare synchronization issue which could cause computers with secure virtual memory to enter incorrect hibernation modes.
  • On the password backpanel, put the focus on the password field by default.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.

ANSIWEN  You can use the following hibernation tool instead. It still works after the security update and doesn't need administrative rights.

PETER DA SILVA  I'm still using the older deepsleep app, I don't use widgets.

Since Security Update 2008-005 this application just hangs. I suspect it was depending on some setuid applescript backdoor to work. :p

ENCGUANO  Would be great if you could choose between this and a smaller design... the full moon is far too big. I got quite a few widgets running and DeepSleep just uses too much space. Other than that a very nice widget. Works fine on Leopard. Got some problems to reach the small "i" sometimes to get to the turn the widget around.

JOHN MCKEOWN  I do not use Widgets - would use if PrefPane or App.

My macbook switched itself (how?) from safesleep to ’Sleep’ always shutting down, and when powered on restoring from saved memory. So I set hibernatemode=0 - that just shut down. Now after firmware update hibernate 0 does really sleep, and wakes fast, but still takes 30 seconds to go into sleep, i.e. I suspect it is saving memory to disk even though hibernatemode is 0. Weird?

LUOMAT  When I tried this on my MacBook running 10.4.10 it shutdown the computer rather than put it to deep sleep.

FRANKVH  I have installed Deep Sleep on my MacBook Intel machine, but whenever I wake it from hibernation the keyboard no longer responds! Trackpad works without problem! Curious if they wil get it to work flawlessly! I would love to use it!

MICHIERU  Awesome widget, now I can put my Mac to hibernate when I am sleeping on those long plane flights knowing I won't lose about 10% battery life by the time I reopen it again.
