DESCRIPTION
Ventrilo is the next evolutionary step of Voice over IP (VoIP) group communications software. Ventrilo is also the industry standard by which all others measure them selves as they attempt to imitate it's features.

By offering surround sound positioning and special sound effects on a per user, per channel, per server or global configuration level the program provides each user the option to fully customize exactly how they wish to hear sounds from other users or events.

Ventrilo is best known for it's superior sound quality and minimal use of CPU resources so as not to interfere with day to day operations of the computer or during online game competitions. It is also preferred for the simple user interface that any first time computer user can very quickly learn because the most commonly used features are immediately visible and can be activated with a single click of the mouse.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.0.4:
  • Fixed crash when using Russian language desktop, and possibly languages other than English.
  • Modified Setup-Voice and Bindings editor so that Mouse-1 cannot be selected as a hotkey.
  • Modified bindings editor so that 16 users / channels can be defined per hotkey (instead of the old 4 limit).
  • Added support for Special Effects (SFX). But only for Volume control at this time. Hope to have more advanced SFX in 3.0.5 client.
  • Fixed Complaint List window so that month value of event is displayed correctly. November was showing up as 10 instead of 11.
  • Fixed bug with phantoms not being added or deleted correctly.

SECTION8  oh good job, way to take forever to release a new version, with a few more relevant features and no backwards compatibility with v.2 servers. AND STILL NO GSM SUPPORT. *golfclap*

FOR NEXTSOFT  No GSM = Useless application. On my wow server there are actually guild which will not recruit mac users because they cannot access the vent server. (This is absolutely true.) Thanks vent. This is typical of the insult Mac users see all to often. A company releases a half hearted version of the app for mac and then site around wondering why no one uses it.

THEFINALEOFSEEM  New version, yet it doesn't work at all with Leopard. It wont recognize a connection to the server. The previous version did, but didn't show channels. At least it worked that well. This one is unusable.

WOZARDOFIZ  Just noticed that version 3.0 for the Mac is available on the Ventrilo site. Also noticed that after 2 years of waiting, the GSM codec is STILL not available for Mac. Unbelievable.

SECTION8  The lack of inclusion of the GSM codec is extremely short-sighted of the developer and alienates mac users from a large number of vent servers. To release a client that has an off-chance of being completely incompatible with a server is just bad practice. If you visit their forums, the thread regarding this issue is locked, and what more, the last pertinent post was posted in 2005. Its now 2007. GET A CLUE VENTRILO.

Also, your audio settings do occasionally get erased.

JAMESG  It's my duty to tell you all about the downright insulting practices used by this developer.

First and foremost, this app has problems. It will occasionally lose your audio input and output settings so you need to be constantly going back in to reset them.

Secondly and most important, the default codec for the PC version is GSM. This codec is NOT supported in the Mac version! Most PC operators will NOT switch to the Speex codec and as a result Mac users are locked out from using Ventrilo.

I made a very polite, respectful, and rational post in the Ventrilo forums about the situation, and rather than a reasonable response my post was DELETED. This has been happening to many other people as well.

Do yourself a favor and switch to Teamspeex. Maybe if you are lucky, your guild will too and you won't be locked out from communicating.

It's free but it's not worth it.

DREMWKR  I use Ventrilo for WoW gaming, so my perspective is based on that experience:

It has all the features I need.

It is easy to use, esp with the interface changes.

For a prototype (Alpha?) version the price is a little high.

It just works, I have not had any problems running it.
