DESCRIPTION
SyncTogether (formerly MySync)... Keep your MacBook in sync with your iMac. Sync up your Mac Pro with your MacBook Pro. Synchronize Address Book, iCal, Safari Bookmarks, and much, much more between Macs. SyncTogether can keep your information and preference settings the same across all the Macs you use. Choose what you want synchronized, too. SyncTogether is fully configurable.

Sync Two or More Macs
SyncTogether is perfect for people who move between two or more Macs, such as a MacBook and an iMac. Easily keep contacts, calendars, notes, Apple Mail account settings and more in sync between your Macs to have access to your information when you need it the most. SyncTogether can run automatically, or whenever you want with the click of a button. It's easy to set up and use across a local network--even via Wi-Fi--and supports advanced IP addressing to sync over the Internet.

Sync Only What You Want To Sync
SyncTogether's selective syncing feature lets you choose individual Address Book groups and iCal calendars to sync with other family members' Macs. Sync only your class schedule, bowling team contact list, soccer game schedule, or family phone list--sync only what you want without sharing your entire contact list and calendar. SyncTogether can even synchronize information between multiple accounts on the same Mac, which is great for families that share a single computer.

ZEEBIE  Can't get it to work, always get the "An SSL Certificate for user@host could not be generated"-error. Wasted hours with the "solution" on their homepage, no effort.

Finally, this application is pure annoyance.

AWULF  I needed a syncing solution between my MacBook Pro and Power Mac G4, and at time SyncTogether has worked but there are a lot of times where it will say it has failed, or it just corrupts all your data (luckily I have most data backed up).

The interface is ugly, and why is there a Mark/Space store in this programme? Paid $50 for a programme filled with ads. When it syncs it pops up the window, which is annoying, why can't it be done in the background? Maybe it should have a menulet?

SyncTogether would be good if it actually worked, but $50 for a buggy beta with ads is definitely too much to pay and I regret it.

HINES  How wonderful it is that a developer creates a new software and it tunes out to be a most confusing, uneasy and featureless app.

It's adverstised that you could sync WHATEVER you want. Well, I can't find ANYwhere to sync files/folders other than what the app restricts you to. And as for setting up the second Mac to sync with, it makes no sense.

Chronosync is much better, simple, to the point, non-restrictive AND could sync over wi-fi, network, etc.

Don't bother with SyncTogether and BOY am I glad I didn't buy it outright.

Some developers probably feel that the more complicated an app is (or in their minds "feature-rich") the better. Not so here...

Pure and unadulterated garbage!

IAMDORIAN  I am troubled by these reports because - 1) There are no positive reports (not on Macupdate, Versionracker, or on the SyncTogether forums posts), and 2) because the only real report (what does only one report mean, few users or everyone is having a bang-up time?) is negative (lost data, very slow, unstable, etc.).

I REALLY need a software solution like this, and am happy to plunk down my $50.00 (a great deal if it works as advertised), but with the reported issues, I wanted to try a demo first. Sadly, it appears that there is (apparently) no demo version any more. The download links at both MU and VT are pointers to MarkSpace only. What does all this add up to?

Well, it's a big red light to me, screaming : "Warning, Will Robinsons, Warning!"

1) Can someone from www.marcspace.com please comment: what of this (these) issue(s), are they being, or have they been, resolved?

2) Can we get a demo? How?

Thanks...Dorian

MILDM8NNERED  Hi Dorian,

I am the original developer of MySync (which became SyncTogether). Although I have continued to work with Mark/Space on SyncTogether, I'm writing here in a personal capacity.

As far as a demo is concerned, that's really a Mark/Space question, so I won't comment on that right now.

As far as the user reviews go, if you look back over the reviews here on MacUpdate, almost all of these relate to the original MySync, and most are very favourable. VersionTracker has a few more negative comments, but these all relate to MySync, and are largely from people who felt (with some justification - sorry about that), that they didn't receive adequate support during the transition.

On both sites, the app has a four star, or greater rating.

The SyncTogether forum at Mark/Space is slightly different. This is for discussion of problems with the app, and gives users a direct point of contact with the engineering teams and vice versa. It's not surprising that there are more problem reports than praise there.

In fact, I've been more surprised at the lack of issues, and the low numbers of support requests that have been received.

Some users will always run into problems with syncing - there are a lot of moving parts, including Sync Services and the client applications. For examples that don't involve SyncTogether, see Apple's .mac sync forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957

However, the overwhelming majority of SyncTogether user's experiences seem to have been relatively problem free as far as I can tell.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Martin

LONGTERM  I've been trying to get SyncTogether to work for weeks now. I bought it when it was released, updated it when the update was posted, but have had terrible results.

Their tech support respondes, albeit 2 or 3 days after I posted my tech support request. I went through this twice, and am once again trying to get it to work through tech support, but so far nothing works.

One of the ridiculous suggestions posted by their forum's moderator was to make sure that iSync is configured to allow browser bookmark syncing. If I wanted to use .Mac I wouldn't have bought this program in the first place... amazing.

This program has been a complete waste of money, and I bought 2 licenses so that I could use it on 4 machines. So I've wasted $100.

UMIJIN  I was really looking forward to this app, as it's predecessor "MacSync' worked quite well for syncing my Yojimbo and other information until recent OS updates seemed to disable it.

Unfortunately, SyncTogether doesn't work correctly for me between my G4 Powerbook and G5 iMac (both using OS 10.4.8), after several trys at resolving the problems. And yes, I followed the suggestions in the help file for troubleshooting.

All my attempts to synchronize Safari book marks, Yojimbo stuff, and address book contacts resulted in extraordinarily long periods of wait (15-20 minutes), and high processor load (on my PowerBook) followed by error messages and a crash of the node on my PowerBook. Contacts and Yojimbo info was partially synched to the iMac, but not at all for the PowerBook.

I guess it's a good thing this product has a demo, because it's not ready for prime time yet.

TC_  Works as advertised. The advantage of this program is that it syncs just about anything that you can sync through .Mac, including contacts, bookmarks, etc. It also has a good user interface.

That said, I prefer address-o-sync for syncing addresses. MySync uses Apple's sync engine. It will inform you if information on cards conflict, e.g., if they have the same work number. However, if information is unique to one card or the other, it assumes that you want to keep it and merges the cards. This can result in bad info. For example, if suppose that the old card for John Doe on machine A has work number 123 and mobile number 456. John Doe has moved, and machine B has a new work number 789 and no longer has his mobile number. When you sync, Apple's engine will inform you of the conflicting work numbers, but will assume, because it's unique to one card, that you want to keep the mobile number, even though it's bad.

On the other hand, address-o-sync gives you three options when any information conflicts on the card: Keep the old card, keep the new card, or merge. It's more flexible, and prevents re-importing bad data. In the example above, I could view the card on both machine A and machine B and reject all of the data from machine A, preventing the bad mobile number from surviving.

EPKPHOTO  Ever since it began supporting syncing computers across "remote" networks, MySync has been growing up nicely. Recently, strong security has been implemented and the app is very stable. If you have a need to do some basic syncing of Address Book, Mail, iCal, Safari bookmarks, Keychains, or even Entourage Notes, and you don't have/want .Mac, give MySync a try. Keep in mind that it is still beta, though.

STEBA  MySync is a great idea, but a worse realization. After synching I had half of my mailboxes in Mail as doubles. But worse, the mailboxes had only empty messages in it. "These E-Mail hasn't been dowloaded from the server..." Too bad these mails were years old and the servercopy long gone. Too good that I had a current backup of my system.

And then it didn't sync the Adressbook properly, leaving some stuff out.

I'm back to manually copying the files from master to slave. Not so convinient, but safe.

DO NOT USE WITHOUT BACKUP! Or don't use it anyhow. Maybe all this will work properly, when it will hit 1.0. Hope so, then it's a great tool by the idea.

AVFOLK  ABSOLUTELY SUPERB -- Very well done, useful.

Interface is clear, simple, and easy to configure.

Powerful options and scheduling. For a beta release

this is excellent and will only get better.

MARTIN REDINGTON  Hi anonymous :-)

remote syncing (i.e. over the public internet) is coming very soon (probably within the month). All the pieces except one (which is very simple) are in place.

I'm just trying to work out all the other (to be honest, very minor) wrinkles, and not to make too many changes too fast.

If you would like to join the beta-testers group, for early access to remote syncing, mail me at mildm8nnered@gmail.com

cheers,

Martin
