DESCRIPTION
GrandPerspective is a small utility application for Mac OS X that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system. It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. It uses a so-called tree map for visualisation. Each file is shown as a rectangle with an area proportional to the file's size. Files in the same folder appear together, but their placement is otherwise arbitrary.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1.0:

Minor improvements:

  • Added number of scanned and deleted files to Info panel
  • Added Rescan button to toolbar
  • Rescan can now optionally close the old window
  • Added context menu to views to let you Reveal, Open and Delete selected files
  • Added ability to store user-editable comments with saved scan data
  • Scan data is now stored in files with a .gpscan extension
    • These files have their own icon and filetype, and are associated with the application
  • You can now invoke the application from the command line with:
    • a path of a folder to scan, or
    • a path of a scan data file to load
  • Added various advanced "How To" sections to the help documentation
Bug fixes:
  • Fixed bug #2562846: Failure to load scan data
    • Incorrect saving of scan data in OS X 10.4 should be fixed now
  • Freed space did not correctly reflect deletion of hard-linked files
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

ZHORA  A superb application that does it's job by letting you do yours without getting in the way. (It's there as your 'helper,' not your 'boss.' Use it briefly to grab back some lost space or go all out and clean out all those long forgotten places – you always come away feeling like you got somewhere without being beaten in the process. Leaves you with a feeling of success and joy! The developer continues to make improvements and responds quickly to any problems that may arise. Truly Mac-like in the best sense!

DRDUL  Nice app, and you can't beat the price. I'd like to see one improvement that (for me, at least) would improve the functionality of GP -- the ability to customize colours. It would be great to be able to create additional, custom colour palettes, and to be able to change the colour of the rectangle that highlights the selected files/folders. My eyes might not be as good as others', because I find it difficult to see the rectangle, and there's no built-in colour palette that provides sufficient contrast in a pleasing combination of colours. If I could create my own colour scheme, GP would be easier for me to use.

ERIBAN  You cannot edit the color palettes from GrandPerspective. However, the color palettes are stored in the standard Mac color list file format so you can edit the palettes and add new ones using a color list editor that supports that format. An example is the ColorListEditor provided by Modesitt Software. Simply store the new palettes inside the GrandPerspective palettes folder (GrandPerspective.app/Contents/Resources/Palettes) and you can use the palette the next time you start the application.

JDUB800  Excellent program - and has leaped in front of DIX for speed and facilities. Filtering works very well. One missing feature however is there appears to be be no way to delete files/folders directly from the map view. Unless I missed something there?

JDUB800  Further to the above, it seems that you CAN delete from the view. Excellent work. A very useful app - 5 stars!

TOWERWORKS  This is really neat and useful. I pulled about 15 gig of unused filed from the hard drive in a few minutes of use. This may be the most useful and simple tool available!

ERIBAN  I have hopefully found the cause of the crash, and fixed it in a release candidate that can (temporarily) be found here:

http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ReleaseCandidates/GrandPerspective-0_9_13_1b1.app.zip

I cannot reproduce the crash myself, so I would be grateful to hear whether or not this version does not crash anymore. If so, I will make it an official release. If not, I will continue my hunt for the bug.

SYHARRIS  Crashes immediateley here too on my trusty old 17" Powerbook running OS 10.4.11.

My Grand Perspective 0.9.13 crash log says it's a

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000.

I'd send the developer a copy of my Grand Perspective crash log but I can't locate an email address for him.

ERIBAN  I am pretty confident that I found the bug that caused the crashes (basically, a silly typo). The fixed application can be (temporarily) found here as a release candidate:

http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ReleaseCandidates/GrandPerspective-0_9_13_1b2.app.zip

If it doesn't crash anymore on systems where it used to crash (please let me know), then it will be released officially tomorrow.

FROMEOUT11  Fantastic program for clearing out your hard drive, or finding out what's taking up all of your disk space. Does exactly as described, with no stability issues for me thus far.

NADEEMF  I find tree maps the absolute best way of representing disk usage, and I think there is no better program to do it on any platform.
